I am amazed about a feature I hadnīt discovered before (probably because it only rarely happens that I abandon fortresses).

Your fortress forming a new civilization and becoming a mountain home.
Just happened with my current fortress. I abandoned it to start a new fortress and saw that my old fortress (which was "just" a duchy upon abandonment) was listed as a mountain home.
I looked further and saw that my dwarves abandoned their old group (i.e. the group name I gave them upon ambark) and immediately afterwards formed a new dwarven civilization.

Maybe it is worth to start an adventurer carer and visit my old fortress at one time

this gives a new meaning to the fortress where i wanted to get the king... now a duke will be enough... and i'll try to abandon it to see if it makes a new civ

Happened to me with my most recent fortress.

Funnily, i had accidently breached HFS, lost 20 dwarfs on the spot and another 30 via tantrum/berserk/stark raving mad spiral and abandoned with just 30 absolutely unhappy, perma-tantruming dwarves left.

That sounds like a fabulous foundation for a culturally rich and lasting civilization.

Happened to me with my most recent fortress.

Funnily, i had accidently breached HFS, lost 20 dwarfs on the spot and another 30 via tantrum/berserk/stark raving mad spiral and abandoned with just 30 absolutely unhappy, perma-tantruming dwarves left.

Fight to the end, dammit. I just started a fortress on a terrifying glacier, and 6 of my 7 dwarves were wiped out by a zombie polar bear before any of them could even learn a skill (I started with all peasants). My last dwarf (who happened not to be holding one of the two picks I had) grabbed a pick, ran underground, and destroyed the staircase leading up.

All I have is a farm plot, about 5 logs, and a sack of plump helmet spawn.

And a peasant.

I'm not going to abandon this fortress. No matter what. Not even if the first few immigration waves are wiped out by that zombie polar bear with three or four names, or if all the caravans are annihilated by those skeletal sasquatches walking on the glacier.

Fortress abandonment is undwarfish.

Sure, why not, Im pretty sure that it will be a fun story. [..and I suppose quite short also!  ]

I guess I'll do it. I hope that damn polar bear gets off the map soon. Right now I'm busy trying to damn a brook and save my biggest fortress, though, so I'll make the thread in a few days or so.

Usually damning a brook is what causes you to lose fortresses in the first place.

I accidentally channeled out part of the brook, and it's flooding a valley. 

Anyway, I'll do the Terrifying Glacier thread later, I'm getting worried about the flooding.

Also, I want my legendary engraver to engrave something other than elves being stricken down by humans, so I need to get a few relevant engravings in too.
