Your Dwarf Fortress Rig
« on: September 14, 2008, 11:33:42 pm »

This is basically a thread in which you show off your computer to the community. Post pictures if you want, but keep them in spoilers to save the page from explosion.

I will start the round off with my 6 year old PC.
First here are its specs:
  • 768mb of SDRAM
  • Windows Xp sp 2
  • Radeon 9600pro (256mb edition) GPU
  • AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.6Ghz) CPU

Most recent thing I have bought for it: A $60NZ logitech G5 gaming mouse. Don't ask me why I bought it, I had $60 in my wallet and it was on sale *impulse buy*.

What I want to upgrade: Pretty much the whole god damn thing. My motherboard is probably most important. But to upgrade that, I need to buy a new everything else.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1. My desk is held together by red clamps as the ball bearings in the sliding keyboard thingy all fell out.
2. I upgraded my CD drive to a DVD drive but didn't realise that I had bought a black one at the time. Oh well Black on beige aint too bad.
3. Stack of DVDs for, errr backing up stuff *cough* Torrented movies *cough*

Feel free to comment/criticize my set up. You know you want to.

Please take a photo off your own PC and post a quick explanation. Without your help this thread will die and go to forum hell.

No pics for you!

Officially assembled: ~6 months ago.

Specs:
  • 1,024mb (1 Gig) DDR2 Dual-Channel etc. etc. o.o
  • Win XP SP3
  • Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT (Complete with Omega Drivers, PCI-E version)
  • Intel Pentium Dual E2140 (2 1.6Ghz cores)

Most recent thing I have bought for it: Buy? BUY?!?! I got the entire damned thing for free! Except for the chassis... that was recycled from an old machine... the old machine was about... 400 bucks? I still manage to have "most" of the old hardware too, some of it was traded in exchange for lesser parts but... meh, trading is good when you can build an entire PC outta it.

What I want to upgrade: I desperately need to up my RAM... sure 1 Gig is alot to SOME people... but damnit, I have to page-file 60% of the stuff I do! This board also pisses me off, and the chassis is too small. I plan on getting a full-tower soon, instead of this little sissy half-tower, and then upping my board and processor to something more... acceptable... aside from buying the new chassis... I plan on spending no money on my upgrades... I could also definately do to consolidate/increase my hard-drive space... My max capacity is... 223.5 Gig of which I am using... 207.3, that is across two Hard-drives, and comes up to being about... 92.75% of max capacity... bad... bad...

Poor pityful Torak...

TREMBLE AT THE POWER OF MY MECHANICAL MONSTER OF A COMPUTER!!!

OP: Win XP Professional SP 3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Monitor: A flat-screen that is about .5 meters across the top, .4 meters high
RAM: About 2 Gigabites
Hardrive space: 298 GB

What do you think of that?

Edit: I fully expect that this... this... inhumanly powerful thing can run Crisis at full detail without too much trouble. And just incase anyone doesn't know what I'm talking about; Crisis is THE most graphical intensive game out on the market today. Serious stuff...

I put together a new PC last November. My old one couldn't handle small maps with 100 or so dwarves. Not a problem anymore. :)

CPU: Q6600 G0 Quad-Core
RAM: Veritech 3GB DDR2 800mhz
GPU: Gigabyte 8800GT 512MB
SOUND CARD: Audigy 4 Pro
HD: 2xWestern Digital 500GB
OS: XP Pro

OS: Win XP Professional SP2 (Yeah, I know, SP3 is out, but I'm lazy)
CPU: AMD Phenom Quad-core 2.5Ghz
Graphics Cards: 2x ATI Radeon 3870s in Crossfire
RAM: 4GB DDR2 1033
Hard drive space: 1x500GB IDE drive, for windows and applications; 2x500GB SATA2 drives in Raid-0 for games, totaling 1.5TB(Or, if you want to be picky, 465.7GB+931.32GB). Free space: 555.17GB
Case: Lian-Li V1100B... This thing is massive.
Custom case work: Custom paint job, window cut out, liquid cooled CPU and video cards.
Moniter: 24" Widescreen with up to 1920x1200 resolution

Total cost: $3600

Other things around my desk: PS2(temporary, it's a friend's), Xbox 360, PSP.
My environment: Desk is an old office desk with no back, so my moniter faces the front of it during the day, then spins around to face my bed at night.

My PC will run Crisis at High with around 30fps.

I built this PC around April 31st-May 2nd of 2008, ordering the parts on April 24th. It took me and a friend over 9 hours to put it together. Maybe I'll post some pics tomorrow.

@ Valarnin: Wow, that is truly amazing. The only set up that i have seen with my own eyes to top that was a TriSLI Ultra build. Now that was amazing, it needed 1300W power source to supply it. If only I had some money...

8800s were $550 a piece at that time, while the cards I got were only $190. And in actuality, each of my cards is clocked higher by default than my friend's 8800 and only has 128MB less video ram(640 for him, 512 for me), the only real downside is the CPU. Most games aren't multi-threaded or if they are, they aren't balanced well. The best I've seen used two cores to their best, leaving 1/2 of my CPU untouched. Crisis can only use two as well, and does so inefficiently(100% on core 1 and 60% on core 2). I'm capable of overclocking my CPU to 2.65Ghz and my Gfx is currently at 827 core/1166 mem(default 777 core/1126 mem). I wish I could do more with my CPU/GPU but it will have to wait on a better motherboard, the one I have doesn't push enough power to really overclock. My CPU/GFX cards all stay below 32ºC even under full load, so it's not a heat issue.

My system:

OS: Vista Ultimate x64
CPU: E8400 core2 duo @ 3.6Ghz
RAM: 4GB
Gfx Card: ASUS 9800 GX2
HDD: 2x Western Digital Raptor-X [150 GB, SATA-II, 10,000 rpm, 16 MB cache]
Monitor: 22" LG L226W

Also..
OS: Win XP Professional SP2 (Yeah, I know, SP3 is out, but I'm lazy)
RAM: 4GB DDR2 1033

What? XP is not able to use 4Gb RAM [even 64bit XP has issues with it], only 2, so huh??  :o

Built this one around the graphics card, back in the day.

AMD Athlon X2 4800+
4GB 128-bit dual channel DDR800
2x 120GB SATA HDDs, RAID0
1x 250GB SATA HDD
nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB OC (gimme some heeeat!)
700W modular PSU
Vista Ultimate SP1
2x 19" Samsung LCDs

Believe it or not, the processor is the bottleneck, according to Vista (5.9 on all items, 5.0 on the proc). Pictures aren't that exciting, since it's just a Lian-Li case, black. Running full-bore (Supreme Commander or Crysis), it'll raise the temperature in the house. I have to constantly keep an eye on the fans - I lose one, she'll melt down (seven total in-system).

All that, and I use it now to run DF and Spore.  :-\

Meh. ASUS A8Sc, best I could get at the time, for what was then 1300$. It's over a year old now. It's also dropped to a 1000$ in price.

WinVistaHP
Intel Core2Duo (SantaRosa) 2.0
1Gb RAM
NV GF8400M G (128)
150Gb HDD split 90/60 into logicals.
14'' 1200x800 widescreen LCD.

It plays DF nice, can run Supreme Commander or Flatout2, and I don't request anything bigger of it.

I have no idea what any of this stuff means, but my system is:

Win XP Home Edition SP2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (It has two of these processors)
1 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600
250 GB Hard drive

Hmm...according to wikipedia (which is always right...) pentium 4 is single-core. But, unless I'm mistaken, which I probably am, I thought my pc was dual-core. Well, when I go on to task manager, there are 2 "CPU Usage History" graphs, and I can set the affinity (...?) to CPU 0 or 1, or both.

 ???
