The much sieged
« on: September 13, 2008, 06:18:30 pm »

Hmm rather odd but I've had two sieges within a year, the most recent I'm going through right now. Heres the troop numbers
Group 1
1 human
-Thefin Atekrostfen, spearmaster, local leader
15 goblins
-9 hammermen
-6 wrestlers
16 beak dogs

Group 2
16 goblins
-Bosa Uslukstosbob, mace lord, local leader
-7 spearmen
-8 wrestlers
16 beak dogs

Group 3
1 Human
-Kuda Xemmori, spearmaster, local leader
15 goblins
-6 swordsmen
-9 wrestlers
16 beak dogs

and I've just begun the 5th year. They brought 3 out of 4 local leaders who i plan to kill/capture. Is it normal for this many beak dogs to show up? Plus ambushes stopped about 2 years ago roughly 6 months before I got my first siege. if your wondering about the last siege heres a pic which I expect to happen this time to

kinda sucks I wasn't able to finish my second courtyard (trap them in!). So (aside from my questions) what are sieges like for the rest of ya'll?

edit: heheh got the third leader in a cage so far (the 3rd group is the only one thats reached me so far), but now a titan has appeared. Oh well he an't going anywhere till the bridge goes down anyway. I hope I can catch him and mate him with my female titan ::D

I've never seen a single beak dog or troll in the probably dozen fortresses I've made. I've had populations over 200 (with a king), fortress wealth in the tens of millions, fortress age over ten years, and nothing but goblins and the occasional human or dwarf.

BTW, I don't think you can breed megabeasts without modding.

I've had trolls, but never the beak dogs.  I love seeing the cyan blood spattered all over my walls; it seems so festive.

The last time I saw trolls in a goblin siege must have been somewhere around version 38 of DF.

At the moment, I am going on a no-trap approach to the game. The past 4 or 5 games I have played I have not lay down a single trap, raised a single drawbridge or locked a door. This increases the difficulty slightly but it still wasn't enough. So to fix the easy goblins problem I downloaded the
Civilization Forge mod which adds multiple enemy races to the foray. Not a minute goes by in my current fort where sieges or ambushes aren't present. It is a lot funner as the difficulty is greatly increased with 7 enemy civs besieging my fort constantly. My military consists of roughly half of the population it includes 14 elite wrestler, 4 swords masters, 10 Swords champions and about 20 brain damaged warriors of various skill (sword fodder). Everyone has at least a steel shield and leather armor, my champs are fully equipped in steel.

Oh and to make the game even more difficult I am attempting to build an above ground city while all of this fighting is going on. Remember losing is fun!

I had a fortress where every single goblin carried a beak dog into battle, and they brought 10-15 trolls every siege. I think it was back in 38d. I haven't seen one of either before, or since.

One time in slave camp, I stuck a !!Cave spider silk sock!! up my fortress.

Well I got all three leaders and that titan. Basiclly I let the first group in, waited for leader to be captured, then sent the marks squads to the z level above here where they can fire from safety. Clean up, reload traps, titan comes running along into traps, reload trap. The last two groups come really close to one another and when I tried to close the bridge before the third group I nearly lost the third leader when he got across right before the bridge went up scattering gobs everywhere. that last leader wouldn't go into the cages so I openned the gates to lure him in. While I got him in a cage a beak dog and a goblin got in and drafted two regular guys tried to fight them. One got its leg torn off and still sits in bed, while a peasant who tried to save him (or get the sock he dropped) was killed. Elite wreslers come around the corner, kill the dog and gob, send marksdwarves up ramp to finish last two gobs in the courtyard. Now I'm hard at work making the second courtyard I've been planning on.

I've never seen a troll or beak dog either.  I never used locked doors or drawbridges, but in my latest fort I've even done away with the elaborate defenses I'd been using (such as Bridge o' Doom-covered trench mazes) and taken to waiting for everybody to reach the entry and charging out en masse.

It's been three or four sieges since I took any casualties :-\

My defenses consist of a large battle courtyard where my champion squads wait for the attackers to enter, protected from arrows and bolts. I've also paved over the muddy pools to prevent drowning, and haven't lost a dwarf in the last dozen sieges.

60 goblins enter, zero goblins leave!

Well my outer courtyard is nearly complete. In other news I've captured yet a third titan who appears to be the last megabeast left alive, aside fromt the two other titans I've captured. Now I'm thinking of making a secondary entrance in such a way that I could send melee troops out without having to wait for bridges or gates to open.
