A fortress divided
« on: September 13, 2008, 01:08:56 pm »

I've got a scenario I'm not sure how to deal with.  I've got a reasonably long-running fortress on one side of the map, mostly near the surface.  I'm desperately short of fuel, and have mostly stopped producing glass and metal items.  However, I recently found a tiny patch of magma on the bottom Z-level a fair ways away from my fortress.  I've moved a lot of my stocks of metal bars and sand bags down there, but my dwarves are still making very long walks to a from -- I've built a very nice dining hall right there, and keep it stocked with food and drink, and I've made bedrooms for all the dwarves who will be working down there, but I still find that whenever a task is assigned, the dwarf in question is up in the main fortress.

What would you do in this scenario?  I'd hate to move my entire fortress this far underground; that'd be a lot of re-engineering, and I'm not sure what to do with my farms at the surface.

WEELLLL.

You could build a glass roof over a channeled out area to have an underground farm that can support above ground plants.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

You could try pumping the lava to a more convenient spot.

Glass roof, stone roof, doesn't matter - once a square becomes lighted, it stays lighted.

What I would actually recommend doing is bringing the magma to you, instead of the other way around. Assuming that you have a magma pipe, and not a pool (pools have a limited quantity of magma), you can eventually get magma anywhere you want on the map. It just might take a few months to get there, is all. Even if you do have a pool, you might have enough; it depends on how big the pool is and how far away it is.

Post a map on the archive so we can better understand your situation. Remember to use Points of Interest.

You could seal off the magma area and then just dump food and drink in through a channel and reclaim it once it hits the ground... I think liquor barrels will survive a 1 z-level fall.

It's a magma pool, not a pipe, sadly.  Still, if I'm careful and pump in stages, I might be able to move it to a more useful location.  I'll look into uploading the map when I get a chance.
