Elven Corpse Peddler?
« on: September 12, 2008, 11:28:50 pm »

I have a habit of checking cages before buying them (to prevent getting some random animal i don't want), anyway to the point... an elf caravan came to my depot, selling a pine cage with.... a dead monkey in it. a few things wrong with this...

1. elves don't like killing.
2. why would there be anything dead in a cage?

and here's the proof of my... odd... new "pet".

...too bad it wasn't UNdead... then i would have a use for it.

Its because that while a creature in a cage is in a traders grasp the creature is vulnerable to temperature. This means that all the animals that the elves will bring you will be dead if they pass through any really cold (or hot, I think) areas. It is really crazy that you can take creatures in cages and submerge them in magma as long as the cage doesn't melt, yet they can't survive crossing the desert that your fortress resides in.

The elves passed through a freezing climate and all of the animals in their cages died.

Look at it this way - you get a cage and a corpse, for the price of a cage. The corpse can still be butchered. So hey, free food, bones, and skin.

However if what you are looking for is a female polar bear to begin breeding your army of war bears, then having the creatures die is a little bit of a drawback.

I hear yah.

Also, please note that you don't even have to buy the cage to get the corpse. Just dump the corpses from the stockpiles screen.

What's wrong with giving them a a couple dolomite crowns for a cage and a corpse?

Not like you're going to use them.

Next caravan, or for other goods the elves bring.

Anyways, why pay for something you can get for free with no consequences?

If it's in bins, to piss off the elves enough to bring their best wooden weapons to battle.

Yeah, it's pretty irritating to not be able to buy animals in cold+ or warm+ regions

I bought a horse from the humans in the summertime and it had massive internal damage. I live in a cold region in real life and can vouch for the fact that animals aren't that easily killed by temperature and summers are quite comfortable

Then again, temperature as a whole is kinda stupid. Streams aren't frozen all year round even in polar regions, there should be a few weeks at least in the middle of summer where you can get water out of the river. There wouldn't even be a river if it never flowed
