My next project is an office building... hard-wood floors, glass windows, steel-core pillars...

I just wish there was a Dorfen elevator.

if your dwarves can swim, i think you could use water to do that.

Hmmmmmmm, a water pump what can pick up objects as well as water.......a dwarf pump, spits him 1 level up.....WAIT WAIT WAIT.......EUREKA!  a CAT GUN!  oh plz Toady, give me the CAT GUN!

i was thinking more about a flooded starwell, but a cat gun should be itnerestign too.
it won't take dwarves 1 z level up, but it would be nice

I'm currently working on this, I dug a large chasm 4 wide and about 6 z-levels deep in a big square and started to build a tower.

The only annoying thing is that you can't build walls on floors you have to remove them then build them.

Why would floors inhibit building?
Just build from several temporary stair-scaffolds inside the tower, construct the outside last.

You can tear down bridges faster.  But be careful: you can designate floors and walls off a bridge, but they aren't supported by the bridge.

Defending isn't too bad, and there's two ways you can go about this.

First, you can have an open fort, but an underground area where you can retreat all civilians if you're under attack.

The other, more common option is to simply dig a moat around your entire settlement. Later on build a wall behind the moat. Build a fortified gatehouse with your barracks at the gatehouse. Then have single dwarf squads with crossbows endlessly patrol around the entire perimeter of the wall. Set harass wildlife to yes and chase enemies to no. They'll passively gun down any nearby wildlife, doing some hunting for you as well as skilling up, and a few highly skilled guys patrolling the walls like this can be utter murder against an invading army.

One of my best ever forts was above ground (with the exception of stockpiles).

But, I kinda cheated - I started in a human town. Free useful wooden buildings and crappy wooden furniture! And melting down coins can get some early metal, as well. Housing isn't much of a problem if you build large apartment complexes and have enough masons, and digging a 1-wide channel around the fort is a very effective defence.
