King of Dragon Pass
« on: September 12, 2008, 06:02:58 pm »

Recently started playing King of Dragon Pass - It is a weird little game. Technically it is a management game but while you are managing your crops and trade you all get the feeling that your are managing the story of your tribe.

It's a great little game that can be played from the CD itself. I had plenty of hours of fun with it a while back.

That game is really awesome. The "main" part of the game might not be all that good, but it's the events that make it shine (with high quality illustrations, and unexpectedly far reaching consequences).

It's a very good game.

What is especially good is that it doesn't force a black-and white DnD-type morality on you. Conversely, you can do what you want, as long as you're ready to accept the consequences of your actions, which might be long-reaching.
For example, if you want to play as a slave-owning tribe, then so be it. Some gods will accept human sacrifices as readily as cattle but when escaped slaves will come to you asking for help, then helping them won't be a 'good' option just because it feels right. Your people and gods will be angered for acting against the ways of your tribe.
You wage war a lot - your warriors will be happy (as long as there's loot), but farmers not necessarily so.
Some warriors from a nearby tribe want to join your tribe - great, but your warriors might not like the newcomers sharing their priviledges. And there might have been a good reason why they had to leave their clan in the first place.
Etc., etc.

Overall, it's a much more interesting and original fantasy game than your run-off-the-mill DnD/Tolkienesque clone.

What the hell! Why didn't I hear a word about it? I'm testing it now! It looks awesome.

Sounds cool, like a single-player Cantr or Wurm-Online.  I'll have to try it.

Yeah, it is a *really* obscure game, though from what I read it has a cult following. The company that made it (A Sharp) seems to have a fair share of tabletop roleplayers. The rest of their products are things like envelope printers.

It isn't really like Cantr, though from what I remember of the players it should be right up their alley.

I just finished playing my first tribe... It ended pretty badly for them, we got smashed by the beastfolk and although I thought I could bring us through, we didn't have enough to make it in the end. We did manage to create a very large tribe though.

Does it have pretty good replayability?

One of the best I have ever seen in games. Even if it repeats some plots, if you try to do exactly as you did before, it might not have the same outcome.

Hm...actually the game is very repetitive after a period, so I dont agree.

Well, yeah, the game formula doesn't change and the plots are somewhat limited.

But... What game isn't like that?
