And now I keep getting messages about jobs being canceled because an area is forbidden. I don't know how to undo this, or what the cat even touched.
What should I do?

 There is clearly one answer:

 Butcher the cat.

 but really, it is probably orders. (o)rders, and from what I remember (i) toggles weather the surface is forbidden or not.

No, they can go outdoors still.
Part of the forbidden area is underground. It seems to go through several Z levels, actually...huh.

 Could we get an idea of what the forbidden area looks like? Does it encompass hallways or major arteries?

 I don't think DF have a designation for an area to be inaccessible to dwarves. The best is make them want to path around an area, but will take it if it's the only way.

I can't really take an screen shots at the moment but...

It was a lake on the surface, that goes down one level.
Other then that, there is a downward stairway near it, then once that goes down one level a downward stairway right next to it (moving closer to the lake) and then another one on the level after that (also moving closer to the lake).
I don't necessarily need this area, but I was planning on using it for irrigation and the like.

Loosing a pet.  Is that what you do when you have all your cats and dogs in a cage at the entrance hooked up to a lever elsewhere, and you pull the lever when the goblins are near the cage?
