Report: You Cannot drown Kittens en masse
« on: September 11, 2008, 11:00:18 pm »

About 30 kittens in a single lead cage survived being inundated by 7/7 water for approximately one season, indicating that cats cannot be eliminated while in a cage.

Magma has yet to be tested. Though I have high hopes that the magma may melt the cage and release the pestilential vermin into the molten rock.

Ah, the scientific method proves valuable once again! Post it on the wiki, might be useful for someone to know. Maybe under cages.

Not new - items and creatures in cages are stored in "hyperspace" and remain unaffected by environmental factors. They can't breed, and atleast in the past, don't age.

Melting the cage will result in a molten cage with an unusual coating, iirc. Atleast it did a few months back.

If you want to mass-dump kittens, you could, for example, pit them, with a retractable bridge/etc under and the water/magma below. Flip switch and watch them plummet to their death.

Just one of the many possible death machines you too can build with Dwarf Fortress!

Result: drowning chamber was drained and captives summarily executed, providing no small amount of meat, leather, and bones to the denizens of Sprayedattic. Research into cat elimination proceeds apace, despite recent setbacks.

This is covered in the wiki under Captured Creatures.  http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Captured_creatures  Basically, to drown anything in a cage you must first rig a lever which opens the cage.  Flood the chamber, pull the lever, watch the show.

Or build a tower and experiment at what height cats and kittens plummet to their death. And at which height the splatter and how high they splatter.

I threw a bunch of kittens into a cave river once (actually it was unintentional - they got washed off of a heavily-trafficked bridge during a tree-farm flooding operation. If it wasn't for the risk of dwarf babies and valuable items getting washed off too I'd recommend this as a pet-segregating technique, but I digress). The kitties literally spent the next few years in the cave river continually trying to swim up a waterfall to rejoin their masters. To get them to properly drown likely requires a roof of some sort (perhaps a grate if you like being mean) to hold them underwater.

If you throw the cage into magma it becomes something like "Molten Lead laced with Kitten Blood", IIRC. All you have to do is make "Molten Adamantite laced with Elf Blood", drain the magma, make a weaponsmith have a mood and you have the greatest artifact known to mandwarfkind.

I hate to ruin your parade, but Adamantine doesn't melt in magma.

Not only that, but the metal you get from melting things in magma isn't usable. In fact, if it's indoors and accessible, a dwarf with the Cleaning labor turned on will stop by at some point with a bucket and a mop to get rid of it.

Yep they don't breed but they put out already made babies and infant animals do grow up.

Yes, because everyday I seem someone attempting to mop up magma with a burning mop.

Does it set things on fire?

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

Build a mechanism and attach the cage to a lever. When the cage is completely submerged then pull the lever, opening the cage. The creatures inside will immediately begin to drown. This has to be reset after every time, but can be useful for killing creatures.

something similar happened to me... my miner, got mauled by a raccoon while resting, he was under ground for a year and a half... so hes useless and vomiting EVERYWHERE, i decided to get him in a cage.... then i dropped him down 14 Z height... he lived! so i filled the pit of no return with water... nothing! eventually i gave up. he sat there for a season and starved to death. the job was done none the less however.
