If you throw the cage into magma it becomes something like "Molten Lead laced with Kitten Blood", IIRC. All you have to do is make "Molten Adamantite laced with Elf Blood", drain the magma, make a weaponsmith have a mood and you have the greatest artifact known to mandwarfkind.
I hate to ruin your parade, but Adamantine doesn't melt in magma.

Remove innate swim from the cat entry. Works in your current game too, just set a pit over water to toss the kittens in. Preferably outside, they do smell
