Yeah, my mod isn't compatable with existing games.  Also, the only midgets you'll find are the Kobolds, and that's only because I haven't gotten along to replacing them yet.

Also: The new "deluxe version" is mainly designed to be compatable with Mike Mayday's graphic and tile sets.  You can download a version of the game from his site with everything installed, then tweak in my stuff.  Other than that, the "deluxe version" isn't much different.

Amazons are so getting spears, there's something really cool about that.

EDIT: Forgot to really address the problem.

Ok, the first thing I do when I play somebody's mod is make a copy of Dwarf Fortress.

Then, I don't touch my original version of Dwarf Fortress.  Do the following with the copy.

First, I change the name to reflect the mod I'm turning the copy into.  For example, I usually name my mod "SageVsSodom".  Next, go into the save file, and delete any region folders you may have (I.E. Just keep the "current" folder).  Everything else in the save file will just crash your game, so best to be rid of it.  Then, find out what the files for the mod are.  In the case of my mod, the files are the raw objects files.  So, delete objects folder from the raw folder from the copy of DF, rename the file "objects", and place it in the raw folder.  That's the safest way to do things, especially since Dwarf Fortress only take up around 5 MB, which doesn't seem alot to me.

I imagine most of this is already known to you, but maybe something is new and will help.  Enjoy the mod!

I concur, spears suit Amazons well, since: (In Greek Myth) they were nomads from the north of the Black Sea. Spears are good cavalry and anti-cavalry weapons and are pretty common in any civilization anyway.

Masks work too. IIRC a character in the Illiad kills a Amazon mercenary in the service of Troy; she wore a bronze mask.

For a flavor helmet, I'd suggest "Crested Helmets" for the non-Norse types.

Grr. It's not working on my copy still. MISSING CREATURE DEFINITION: HUMAN or something or other. It's starting to annoy me that I can't play this. Ah me.

Ran it with no OTHER mods, worked fine. Alright, gotta bring it back up. It wasn't the new trap I was reccomended to mod in either- it was my favorite pregenerated map made by inaluct, Hellscape. Sigh. Gonna have to make a nasty map myself and hope for the best. But I can now embark with vikings- huzzah!

So! I was carefully preparing to embark on one of my favorite map types (magma pipe, HFS, lots of evil, lots of savage, chasm, underground river, aboveground river, some wood- beautiful, really), and I'm looking through deciding who's getting what skills... And I see a few things of interest:

Netcaster
Wrestler
Berserker
Runeseeker
Wolfman
Thunderchild
WisdomChild
Coward
Shield User (Seen it before, never in embark however)
Armor User (Seen it before, never in embark however)
Swimmer (That always been there? Good lord!)

Interesting things, EuchreJack! Whaddatheydo?! (Especially berserker- that one really looks like fun!)

I'm tempted to give everyone something of one of these skills and push back their talents in the necessary ones. Who knows what'll happen!

Thunderchild is hammerman, wisdomchild is spearman, coward is crossbowman, netcaster is probably fisherman, berserker is probably axeman.

Netcaster-fisherman
Wrestler-you should know this, it's the unarmed combat skill
Berserker-axeman
Runeseeker-swordman, due to the one of the viking swords being the "runeblade"
Wolfman-Maceman, based off Diablo II's barbarians mainly
Thunderchild-Hammerman, based off Thor, god of Thunder, his weapon
WisdomChild-Spearman, based off Odin, god of Wisdom, his weapon
Coward-Crossbowman, since only cowards would use ranged weapons.  REAL vikings never use crossbows.

Well, my poll has more than 15 votes, so I should probably think of working on this.

WOW, somebody actually wants the mod to be more conservative!  I laughed pretty hard when I read that.  It's not that I don't respect their opinion, it's just that I didn't expect it.

If anyone wants to suggest how this mod could be better via conservatism, I'm all ears.  I'll even read pm's, if you're rather not deal with the people who like the skimpy clothing.

Also, the Valkryries are sad nobody wants to see them in Victoria Secret clothing, unless the Amazons are also present.  Especially since they're Norweigen.  I was originally going to set them so they would only snatch babies and not siege, but they're ticked.  Something about wiping out the undeserving masses.

EDIT: I guess I know who the conservative is.  Too bad I've been playing A LOT of Liberal Crime Squad lately...

I'm not for conservatism: I'm for bleeding accuracy! The Valkyries, daughters of great warrior Odin, would not ride into a battle dressed like wannabe pamela anderson clones, no they would not! They'd wear enough plate mail and leather layering that they'd double their own weight, and if you're going with the traditional alto-tenor version of a Valkyrie, that's a lot of doubled weight! I can understand amazon's being in leather, I -get- it, and it's sensible for their myths and legends back then. Fully decked out knight-armoring wasn't in vogue yet in early Classical time, and an Amazon would wonder how in the hell they'd chase down their opponents if they were wearing so much extra weight.

Valkyries, babies, light of our eyes, escorts of the great, daughters of the Spearman, it's not that we don't want to see you in skimpy clothing, it's that we
A) Wouldn't want you to take any chances getting hurt,
B) Know you can handle armor better than those Amazons who aren't used to it
and
C) Are certain you'd feel more comfortable riding about wearing what you usually wear!

I'm thinking of giving Valkyries armor, but little else.

I'm certainly good with that :D

Do you know a way to make the Ungoods use trap components as weapons? I just thought to myself, the idea of screaming hald naked leather clad humans running at a dwarf recruit waving wildly a Giant Corkscrew... the wounds would be worth recording. And I also thought how awesome and hysterical that would be.

You have to change them from trap component to weapons. Those two are different kinds of items, so trap components all use the unarmed skill, unlike weapons. I think.

Actually, what I'm going to do is combine the trap item "giant corkscrew" and the weapon item "Halburk".  So, it will use the spear skill.  I'll probably rename it a little, just to avoid confusion.  Thanks guys!

I've been working on this mod, and hopefully will have a new release soon, along with a customized version of Mike Mayday's graphic/tileset.  Hopefully.

New version is up, under the deluxe option.

Also, as the Valkyries have been included, I've locked the voting.
