First attempt at Adventure Mode
« on: September 11, 2008, 06:31:43 pm »

I finally got around to trying Adventure Mode this afternoon (I've been enjoying fortress mode too much to try this before now). I read the wiki, and I've been reading the postings here, so I thought I was reasonably well prepared. Hah!

I started as a human, and the wiki says that humans start inside the Mayor's house. Well, there were no houses anywhere in sight. I wandered around a bit and came to an elf village, so I explored that. (I was surprised to see all the shops. I thought I'd read that only human settlements had shops.)

Then I Traveled to another elf village and to a human town. At the later location, I got an assignment to kill a named creature (giant? titan? I can't remember right now), but I knew I was in no shape for that. So I started wandering around the countryside, looking for something to kill (or for something to kill me). Nothing!

So how the heck do you find animals? Or goblins, or kobolds, or... something to attack? Frankly, this is getting pretty boring, just walking and walking. And I'm going to run out of water soon.

I'm sure I'm missing something, but what? The wiki seems to skip over this part of the game. It talks about combat, but first you have to find something to fight, don't you? How do you do that? (I really doubt that my first fight should be with a named creature! I haven't even found any meat shields helpers.)

Thanks,

Bill

Shift-T travels. You get frequent ambushes and it takes less time. It also fully heals all wounds and thirst/hunger/tiredness.

Alternately, swim down rivers, killing fish gives fairly good xp until you get encased in ice on a cold map.

Did you use the Play Now option, or select a human civilization?

Chances are you spawn in a human town inhabited by elves. They don't make buildings, but if enslaved/assimilated by the humans after their forest is captured, they'll live in houses, and tend to be seperated from humans.

Did you use the Play Now option, or select a human civilization?

I selected a human civilization (or, at least, I assume that's what it was - not the top "Play Now" option, anyway). There was no instruction in-game, so I was guessing about most of it (despite copying out the wiki info).

Chances are you spawn in a human town inhabited by elves. They don't make buildings, but if enslaved/assimilated by the humans after their forest is captured, they'll live in houses, and tend to be seperated from humans.

I didn't spawn in a town at all (certainly not in the mayor's house, like the wiki says). When I did find the nearest town, it was not just inhabited by elves, it showed as an elf town on the map (the "i" icon). If this were a human town inhabited by elves, wouldn't the map still show one of the human icons?

Shift-T travels. You get frequent ambushes and it takes less time. It also fully heals all wounds and thirst/hunger/tiredness.

Well, I did travel this way sometimes (though I had no particular place to go). No ambushes. And since I found no enemies, I certainly had no wounds. But I was afraid I'd run out of water (didn't want to use the 'stagnant' water in creeks - and why is running water stagnant, anyway?), so I've started Traveling whenever I got thirsty.

But this hasn't solved my main problem of where to find... something!

Alternately, swim down rivers, killing fish gives fairly good xp until you get encased in ice on a cold map.

When I found a river, I got constant messages about carp being encased in ice. (The water in my waterskin keeps freezing, too.) It didn't seem like a good idea to try swimming!

OK, after walking around for hours (real-time), I found one fox. And killed it. Woo, hoo!

Heh, heh. Then, after more walking, I started getting messages about carp and other fish slamming into obstacles and dying. But I never did see where it was coming from. I couldn't even find the river.

Eventually, I found another river, and the fish would attack my character as he walked along the bank. (Noting the frequent messages about fish being encased in ice, I was hesitant to actually get in the water, though.) That's really the only thing I've done except walk, walk, WALK through empty wilderness.

All I really need to know is if I'm missing something. Is this the game, then? Is it always this hard to find animals or... something to attack? The world seems to be virtually empty.

As a beginning adventurer with no helpers (haven't found anyone who'll join me yet), I really doubt if I'm ready to take on a goblin town or a named creature. And killing carp is not making my skills advance much at all. I started with an iron weapon and armor, which seems kind of odd. Why wouldn't a beginning adventurer start out with low-level equipment? I haven't seen anything in the stores much better than what I started with (not that I have anything to trade, except a fox corpse and a couple of fish - which will probably rot before I get them anywhere).

I know this part of the game is less developed than Fortress Mode, and that's no problem. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something. Am I?

It was an elf town, but an elf town subjugated by humans. You should mostly travel with 'T'. That way the predators will find you more easily. Try to find places with few towns (other than elves) these places are more likely to be 'savage' and have more predators around.

Also, the "i" stays no matter who owns it. It just means that originally it was an elven forest retreat, though now the humans own it and built a town.

As for combat, next time to generate a world, make caves visible on your map, and let the world run for about 230-245 years, bound to be stuff to kill. Also, always use "T", as its almost impossible to find animals without it.

You're saying that it was originally an elven forest retreat, but humans built a town there and own it now,... but only elves actually live there? I think my head is going to explode. :)

And why, as a human, did my character begin in the wilderness? Is the wiki just wrong about that?

OK, I've actually seen - once - when Traveling, the option to end up near a creature or a town. The creature was just an elf from the nearby town, but that's how you find creatures? Just by Traveling to random locations?

I'll give that a try.

Meanwhile, I took the fox corpse and some carp corpses to a shop, but I couldn't seem to trade them. I'm guessing that they weren't worth enough to buy anything, but... is there a way to tell the prices/value of anything?

And how do you trade for money? I just wanted to dump off the corpses before they rotted (if they'll rot in my backpack) and to lighten the load. But I couldn't figure out any way of doing that. Of course, since I started out with iron equipment, I don't know if I'll ever find anything worth buying (except better quality iron equipment), but loot is the whole point behind an adventurer, right? :)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

The reason only elves live there is because no humans wanted to move there, or if they did they just got out-breeded by the elves. As for why your in the wilderness, how far were you from the town? did you just walk to it, or did you "T"ravel to it? If you just walked, then the game considered it "close enough". Otherwise, perhaps your human civilization doesn't have any cities left. They may be reduced to migrants, with no home. Look into "Legends", find out who took them out, and get revenge.

And, no, loot isn't the reason to adventure. "WTF?" moments are the reason to adventure. Try throwing a fly at someone. Oh, and when using "T", don't just move one spot or whatever your doing. Just keep moving back and forth on the world map, and you'll get ambushed. Or find a town, and attack the inhabitants.

Yeah, I just walked. It wasn't far.

That's OK for a brief trial, I suppose. But for more than an hour or so? No, not for me.

After Fortress Mode, I was probably expecting too much. THAT really is a great game. I know this is still in alpha, so I'll let it sit until there's been more development.

OK, as soon as I started playing again, I did get ambushed on the world map. A pack of wolves had surrounded me, and I was mortally wounded before I could do anything at all. The problem here was that there was nothing I could do about it. If I'd seen the wolves coming, I could have used clever (maybe) tactics to take them on one at a time. As it is, I just had to hope I survived.

And my character did survive, and was instantly healed by Traveling again. It didn't make a whole lot of sense. Unless there are interesting things to discover in the world, I can't see much fun in this. But that's OK. I'm having plenty of fun in Fortress Mode.

You started out next to a forest retreat, which doesn't look like much really.

The starting location seems to be random.  Essentially, if the civilization had 3 towns, one subjugated forest retreat, and one subjugated goblin fortress, you'd have a one in five or 20% chance of starting in the subjugated forest retreat.

What's REALLY fun about getting ambushed by wolves is getting your sword/mace/whatever stuck in one of the wolves, and having to abandon it so you can live, ESPECIALLY when you've put all your starting points into using that weapon.  Ha Ha, lots of fun.

I too have found adventure mode somewhat hard to get into.
There never really seems to be much to do other than get your throat ripped out by the first pack of wolves.
I have yet to come across any treasure caves or any features which are really interesting.
Now if I could do everything a fortress mode dwarf could- pick up a pick and start digging, build a house out of rocks etc etc then it would gain a massive amount of appeal.
That and more wild animals, in adventure mode I rarely see much of anything alive unless I get attacked by wolves.

and why is it so slow? I can run a 5x5 fortress with 100 dwarves just fine but it goes at a crawl in adventure mode.

It has to do with your speed compared to the speed of everything else in the local area. If most things are faster than you, they get to move a lot when you take one step. Basically it 'pauses' you to let other things happen, and thus lag.
