Hudsucker Proxy: For The Children
« on: September 10, 2008, 06:41:28 pm »

"You know, for kids." ~ The Hudsucker Proxy

Anyone have changes they'd like to see in a mod for children?  At this point I'm writing it for 8-10 year olds, unless there are enough suggestions for other ages.  I'm still learning to mod, but I'll keep a list to reference as I progress.  I'm adding many personal details, for my own children, so I'll likely never release the original, but I'm open to releasing a modified version for the general community.

(Inspired by this thread and this link.)

I think this is a really cool idea, but don't have much in the way of concrete suggestions.

How are you going to replace the decapitation and what not... "the spining nerf dart hits the robot, it has falen apart"?

You'd have to mod every creature to only have a single body part, preserving the functions of all of them, so that no body parts ever get dropped.

This would severely screw up combat/wounds (it would be like getting wounds to every single organ at once), probably mess up object-holding, and actually, probably isn't even possible.

Granted, he's also implied that he's okay with limbs being dropped, because, to him, kids don't have exposure to that sort of thing in the real world so their imaginations totally won't let them get disturbed by seeing a baby's head on the ground next to the severed arm of some kobold.

Honestly, I don't see how anybody who's not old enough to be properly exposed to the entirety of DF could possibly understand the intricacies.
Hell, not very many who ARE do.

I would think 8-10 year olds would be old enough for minor bloodshed - sure, decapitating goblins should probably be removed, but a hunter getting chewed on by a bear - stuff like that happens in fairy tales all the time.

i read it too, and could you distribute it if you make that (becouse in the other thread i see no conclusion ...)
it just wanted to make me want play non-violant dwarf fortress ... (i still do some kind of that by no sieges, no temperature and still cave ins becouse i never do them :D) defenetivly i like non violant games most of the times, i can't even watch horor films.
so please if you can make it (withouth the personalisation of course) show it for us becouse more people could be interested in it.(and not just childs)

Mohreb,

A G rating would turn the game into Bob the Builder on steroids, and be nearly impossible without the source and some development time.  I'm only looking to make a PG/PG-13 version, but I'll see what I can do after that's finished.

Hex,

Very insightful thread, and some really thoughtful posts by yourself and others.  Where were all of you in my suggestion thread?   Anyhow, it certainly has me excited about my own mod.
