'Natural' Glass mod
« on: September 10, 2008, 06:32:18 am »

I was bored, fiddled around and made veins of 'natural glass' (glorified gems) for the four colored sands for extra mystical flavor. Should make desert maps somewhat more interesting mining wise.

There's dark (black), ruddy (red), tawny (yellow) and pallid (white) glass that occur in veins in layers of the appropriately colored sand and are rendered into chunks when mined. They will often contain small clusters of purer glass chunks (pure dark/tawny/ruddy/pallid glass), which are much more valuable. Once in a long shot clusters of the purer glass will contain a 1-tile cluster of very valuable glass, which coincide with the color of the glass around it but have special names. There's midnight (black), scarlet (red), blazing (yellow) and blanched (white) glass that is naturally formed into prisms which can be cut to be smoothened out.

It's only one file, so i'll just post it. Copy this into a blank notepad (or whatever you use) file and put it in the raws folder.

For what it's worth, I don't think "natural glass" really occurs except in highly volcanic areas, and we have that: Obsidian.

Well, speaking realistically, anyway.

Especially weird in a desert. I mean, deserts have sand constantly shifting around and being eroded. Why would glass form there?

The only way I know of that glass forms naturally, besides volcanism, is meteorite impact, as well as extraterrestrial materials themselves, possibly.

The mod isn't supposed to make actual geological sense. It's just supposed to be for 'mystic flavor' in a fantasy setting. Also, a sand soil layer doesn't even have to be in a desert. It could be a forest, tundra, grassland, etc. Plus, it only happens under the 'floor' layer of the desert which you could contend is pretty static.

Great... But what about maps without sand?

Great there's giant eagles in savage mountains but what about calm oceans?

Excellent retort! Four points out of a possible five. Just a comma short of a perfect score. So sad.

Also, nifty minimod. I might end up using it.

Hrm. Yeah, I get what you mean about it not being intended to make geological sense.

But, while you're at it, you always COULD throw in existing stuff, like moldavite, or other tektites. Extremely rare tektites would probably be considered for use as valuable gems for dwarves.

I think the problem is: How do you make them extremely rare but also exist in basically random places? I imagine tektites don't occur in highly particular places, since they're not even from this planet.

And yeah, I know I'm overthinking this. :P I'm just thinking out loud, I guess.

Comma? What comma? :shifty eyes:

I found a quibble in the 'large gem' items. I'm editing the code in the OP to make them "large pure ruddy glass chunk" instead of "large pure ruddy glass". (Yes i know its a freakin' mouthful)

Id be impressed... but I know that natural glass is either Obsideon or Quartz...

Which basically means I am biased

Thats just geological terminology, this is glass glass.

Call it 'Mystic Glass' or 'Magic Glass' if you must. They aren't actually called 'natural glass' in game anyways.

And ye shall have ' 's around the word natural in the thread title. And it was so.  :P

I'd like to add that i originally intended these to be like crystal glass in that you can make them into glass objects, but since that would just make them alternatives to rock crystals to make crystal glass i decided against it.

Maybe when toady lets us make custom glass types.  :-\

Sorry to quibble, but quartz is a crystal, not a glass  :P
It's an ordered array, as opposed to a glass which is disordered.

Yeah, quartz is large, crystalline silicon dioxide.

Sand is essentially small bits of crystalline silicon dioxide, and glass (as in, the glass produced by people commercially that you see around the house) is glassy/noncrystalline silicon dioxide. I'm pretty sure obsidian is mostly silicon dioxide as well.

Natural glass is real.  When lightning strikes sandy ground, it heats it such that it melts, and cools into glass.  I actually collect these RL, and know a guy who makes them artificially by shooting off toy rockets with long wires attached during storms.  The wires are grounded in a barrel of sand.

Cool. Mine comes in veins and isn't always at the surface though, so i'm sticking to magic as the explanation.  :P

That makes sense, if the sand cools down fast enough after the lightning strike.

Also, you know awesome people.
