I'd love to use notes to mark levers -- but it doen't seem to do anything.
How do you use them?

SHift + n to go into note mode.
Then p to place a note at a certain location
and n to write the text for the note.

As soon as you have made this the note is pinned at the locationyou selected and can be read everytime you go into the note-mode (by pressing Shift+n)

Yup.  Marking levers, planning layouts and, most importantly...  leaving my alter-ego notes along the lines of:

"DON'T pull the lever @ X,Y,Z UNLESS the floodgate @ A,B,C is CLOSED!"

Now, if only I can convince her to start checking the notes before pulling the aforesaid lever...   ::)

(Levers here too.  My recent fortresses have been festooned with levers and my brain can't cope.)

Same here.. ;D

Levers, Clan Houses, historical events, and obituaries/tombstones.

suggestion: if you place a note and then engrave that square, the dwarf will engrave all or part of the message into the wall or floor.  Custom tombstones, and fort history from the player;s perspective.

It would be really cool and kinda badass, but it takes away the funniest part of engravings: Their randomness! ;D

Mark lever for what they do.  I also like to color code them as well.  Red background for levers to set during siege (to lockdown the fort), levers that control magma related stuffs are labeled with orange background and red symbol.  Water with the two shade of blue.

I also note different rooms (like low-quality rooms, mid-quality rooms, hi-quality rooms) and special site (dump #1, #2, #3 etc).

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I think that the engraving thing is a great suggestion, actually.
I'm sure it would be nice and easy to use.

To keep some randomness, perhaps something like:

Engraved here is a masterfully designed image of a frame by Cog Rakust.  The frame is a repeating pattern of feather trees.  Within the frame is written 'Don't pull this lever!' in well designed letters.
