Notes - question for the note users.
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:05:04 pm »

Now that the ability to add notes to specific areas has been in for a while, how are you finding it?

What do you mainly use it for?

What clever ideas have you had for novel uses?

Tell all, please.   ;D

I've been using it to tell me what levers do what. At least for the the operation that I don't have burned into my skull. I also use it for future plans and reminding me what is what.

Indeed, levers.  Occasionally, I'll mark something amusing or historic (such as a battle site), but mostly levers.

Same as THLawrence, to tell me what my levers do
(well, not every single lever, but rather for every niche with levers in my control room, for example, this niche for the levers for the bridges of my outer defensive wall, this one for the arboretum and this one for the floodgates to the well).

In the design phase of my fortress I usually also make notes for the use, every large room should have and, later in the game, notes for some special rooms (for example workshops that are especially made for the Elite or, as education workshops, for rather unskilled dwarves)

I've been considering using notes on the stockpiles for trade-goods - for easy reference, rather than going through the trade-agreement menus every time I want to remind myself what junk I'm supposed to be stockpiling before the next caravan.

The levers in my control room.  Sometimes I use them to mark graves.

Levers and mayor's buildings (or any noble who can loose his job, really).
Also, to make pretty patterns.

Mainly marking levers, but I also use it to denote future building plans and military strategies, etc.

What kind of military strategies?  Planned patrol-routes and guardhouses?  Or something more elaborate?

(Levers here too.  My recent fortresses have been festooned with levers and my brain can't cope.)

I love them. I have a room with about 58 levers in it connected to various things ( mostly my aqueduct/sewer system which covers the bottom 4 z levels of the map ) it would be literally impossible to navigate without notes. I would mark graves, but there isn't much point since I just dump dead dwarves into the sewer and forget about them. Eventually they flow into the Chasm, and I guess that great dwarfy hole in the sky.

I'm used them to help mark out where certain things will go (like floodgates, hatches, etc.) along with digging designations. In other words, planning. Which reminds me, I need to remove them now that said furniture is in place.

Also, for marking what levers do. Most definitely.

I'd love to use notes to mark levers -- but it doen't seem to do anything.
How do you use them?
