Steam power would be hilarious.
Imagine the shenanigans used to make *Elf Steam* to power your Water Pumps.

Well, Dwatlas was coming along nicely. Then Trolls happened, which removed enough of my supporting walls to bring it crashing down. Then I got pissed, went to play Burnout Paradise (Cars go smashy smashy), went back to start working on it again...And then it turns out that it had gone corrupt.

Yeah.

No Dwatlas from my behalf.

You never backed up? I make it a point to backup after any major milestone during a megaproject. I feel that save scumming is legit when faced with having to relay hundreds of walls and floors and stairs and what have you.

The backing up thing...yes, I suppose I should've done that. I completely forgot about that. Also, the idea of savescum was quite far away from my mind when the trolls had knocked down the supporting walls before the military could arrive. I was rather annoyed at the time, so...

I thus humbly present my addition to this epic thread:

Fort and pyramid of Windyanvil:

Pyramid and plaza of windyanvil:

This is what the plaza is actually supposed to look like though:

Fort is made of red kaolinite and pyramid of yellow orthoclas. Pyramid didn't turn out quite as epic as originally planned but I'm planning a new one in a desert fort, that will be quite greater. Still, I consider this not bad for my firsr megaprojects.
Pyramid will service as a tomb for my warriors, and the fort towers for housing snipers.

My latest fort.

And the pumps used to drain the whole lake:

Constructions on this project have used upwards of 10,000 stone blocks, primarily gabbro and olivine.  When I first moved to this map I was expecting the lake to at least freeze on occasion so I could get the foundation down.   However somehow I ended up in the right climate spot so that not only didn't it freeze, no water evaporates ever.  I still have 5 year old splashes of 1/7 water in the basements.

Heh, my current project is fairly pathetic compared to all of yours. I found a site that lacked a stream, but had a cave river that came really close to the surface (< 20 horizontal tiles). What I didn't know until I had embarked was that the site had an "EFFING STEEP" cliff. Or that said river was about 50 z-levels from the bottom of it.

Of course, I've been trying to make a waterfall leading down to an artificial stream. It's been aggravating thus far, though. I've been savescumming a bit, but each time I breach the river it ends up spilling out the nice vertical channel I made. Guess I'll have to encase the waterfall (in glass?).

i have 2 new mega projects that im sure would keep you guys busy.

1. a fort surronded by a full circle of a twice as high z level waterfall. a surronding floor of pumps with grates over them with a huge stair case of ramps so traders can get in.

make the fort have a lever to water proof it and turn off the pumps,  so it engulfs your fortress in water. (make sure to have 2 levers one for water and one for floodgates so when you drain the water the fort doesnt open while the water is still draining...and i literally just thought of how laggy that will become lol)

2. library - a huge room that archives your fortresses history. (is it possible to erase or replace engravements?)

If you build a wall or other construction on an engraved floor, it destroys the engraving.  Once that construction is removed, the floor can be re-smoothed and re-engraved.

i'm trying to figure out what you mean by number 1... like... a fort inside a giant tank with a switch to stop water flowing out?

Having built two towers and a waterfall machine, I've had a few normal projects, but nothing MEGA.
Advise me what to build next on this map. The community demanded it.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to finish? My current fort will be slightly related to yours...not building on a lake, but I'm estimating I'll be using 20k+ obsidian ;D I've encountered a setback, however, as my magma duct isn't moving magma to my obsidian farms fast enough to meet my quota (Three batches (100 each) per month)...even when I only use 1-2 depth magma for the obsidian :\ In the process of expanding the duct, but I'm lacking in bauxite.

The original hope was to finish in ~8 years, but at the moment I'm looking at 10+ easy :\

ok, take your fort, dig a large cylinder below an aquifier or something. with your fort at the bottom of it. make the floor around your fort pumps with grates over them so it will suck the water out before it reaches the fort. bringing it back up to fall down the huge circle water fall again.

G=grate
P=pump
F=fort
W= water fall

ok that didnt work. imagine that the top view os a corcle and the side view has all the waterfalls in 2 vertical lines and the forts are in the middle
