My current project is not exactly mega, but still frought with peril. I'm going to attempt to flood the cave river up and over the HFS, through a magma pipe, and then pressurize up to the surface in order to make both a moat and a source of freshwater for my wells. All of this will be done through using dwarf mason after dwarf mason in futile attempts to block up the whole downward passage area of the river. Just 1 level above the chasm, my team will attempt to construct a bridge capable of damming the river, and then mine a tunnel up to the surface. Due to the nature of where the river is and where I need it to be, I'm going to have to clip through the HFS, wall it strategically in order to carry the water through, and then move on to the magma pipe. I will use a bucket brigade, magma pumps, and strategic channeling to get an obsidian wall pipe that, instead of just capping the pipe and running the water over top, will make a pipe through the pipe, so that water can rush in. I expect 9 or 10 of my 50 dwarves to survive.

This sounds awesome. How do you plan on pulling it off? Remove most of the magma and slowly build the pipe into the tunnel as the magma refills?

What if someone made a fortress completely made out of admantite, with lava moat, every object being legendary quality and only max-experiene dwarves? That woul be uber.

...I don't know if the adamantine thing would even be physically possible.

Start countless fortresses near HFS in a very large map, mine adamantium in every single one, the come by in an adventurer and collect all the adamantium in the world and transport to a single fortress, then reclaim?
Maybe?
Worth it? Probably not, regardless.

Well the top level of the pipe has a perfect circle design, 9 across all ways. I plan on making a 3 wide wall area, and make the walls extend down three levels, through piping up water, and then pumping magma over the top of it so that it blends into the pipe completely. Then, my miners simply dig out the entire middle square, so that from a horizontal perspective, theres a tunnel in the pipe, like this

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-------------------
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO where O is a solid wall tile of obsidian and - is a mined out space. On the middle level of the tunnel, it'll look the same. On the bottom and top levels of the tunnel, it'll be all wall.

WOO HOO!  Almost done with Tronjheim!  Only one more little layer, all done by 8 dwarves, all of whom are now legendary miners.  I had to have Urist McImmigrant make his own pick when he came.  I've definitely cheated a bit though, as any caravan that comes by I deconstruct the depot for so I can just take their stuff.  To keep myself from feeling guilty I've decided to tell myself the mountainhome commissioned this project and that the Dwarven caravan is just here to resupply me.  The Elves I'm just treating normally.  I could probably just trade the hundred or so gems I've mined out, but they're all uncut and I've saving them for encrusting random things with.

I haven't played DF in months, I've been away at school, ie with a laptop and no large keyboard so it's awkward for DF. Anyone think this idea could work, though:

I basically want a bunch of goblin/animal/criminal dwarf POWs stored on a drawbridge at the top of a big tower. In the event of a goblin siege, I fling them as sort of living buckshot at the invaders.

How far could I expect the ammunition to be flung? Would the impact hurt any invaders or would it just cripple/dismember the ammunition? I think it would still have a fun demoralising effect.
I've got something like this I finished recently. Basicly pit gobs onto a bridge and drop them from that one to the one below that when the haulers start acting up then drop them to one last bridge ready to be dropped onto invaders. I'm curious to see if they will cause damage. The dropees come in two flavors, orc and amazon. Unfortunatly they don't fight each other but oh well.

That's how you would do it, of course.  I was just thinking that adamantine is so rare and comes in such small amounts when it's found, there may not be enough of it in the entire world to make an entire fortress out of it.

I always wanted to build a super tall skinny tower above a magma pipe, fill it with as much dwarves as possible then remove a "key stpne" and watch it sink at high velocities into the magma :D

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

... Tronjheim! ...

Eragon ? :-\

Yup.  Tronjheim is a hollowed out mountain, and that's what my fort is gonna be.  I don't think anyone's ever tried anything like it, but when I finish it I'll upload the map.  I expect that to be sometime today.

Done.  Well, at least the cavern is done.  I'm on my second reclaim, mainly because I didn't want to deal with 70 dwarves.  Time to initiate the cleanup.

Okay, I have a massive Olivine tower forming, and i'm going to make my dwarves live in it after the skeleton is done being made
: D

Also, I intend to have hanging cages suspended over pits of water with salamanders in them (immolation tags included) and then lower them in, the steam produced could then be used to power machinery, correct?
(verify please?)

What? I've NEVER heard of STEAM being used to power ANYTHING in DF.
