I'm building a dwarven Secret Testing Facility.
I have placed traps everywhere on the surface of my map. When I catch a creature or enemy I perform tests on it.
How long does it take to drown a Goblin?
How high does a fall need to be to be lethal?
How fast can this animal get out of the maze?

I also test on dwarven immigrants. If I get a married couple, I will drive one of them mad and see if they will kill their partner.
I also experiment on elaborate traps.

I have also built a huge prison to keep immigrants and dwarves alike.

Then there's a floor dedicated to documenting the results. It is a massive floor with several Legendary Engravers working on it.

I recently also started catching, buying and trapping animals in a huge zoo. I aim to get as many different species as possible in it.

O.O

This is awesome, and all of your findings need to be posted.

I will. I am currently busy building and preparing.
Once I am ready for performing the tests, I will create a new thread dedicated to my findings. Depending on how well things go, I will also take requests for experiments people want me to perform.

So heres my big plan for my first Megaproject...

My project is underway.

... And heres another update.

Heres the barracks floor again. I've moved the food upstairs which has let me move the meeting area out of the archery range:

And heres where the food has gone, food production floor. I don't actually have 2 brewers, cooks, etc. Most of the workshops are just for sake of being symetrical. I might need them one day if I ever take off the 70 pop cap. The butchers on the left have doors out and down to the refuse pile, which is on top of my greenhouse... because clearly rotting animal chunks filter UV light or something >_>:

Third floor, workshops. Totally inefficient, but I'm more going for looks. There's various stockpiles for raw materials, finished products will go on the next floor up which I'm partway through building. The gap just below the wood pile will be for bones and shells as soon as its not 'outside':

So far we're up to about 5600 glass blocks used. The next floor up is going to be one square thinner, but I probably won't taper it very fast. Maybe 3 more floors that width, then taper again. I've really already got a whole lot of unused space. I'm thinking that instead of a combined floor of dining and meeting hall, they'll probably end up with thier own floor each. That should pretty much make a legendary dining room certain heh.

Plan for first attempt: a 5 z-level high Mayan pyrimid kind of thing made of clear glass, intended to be a shrine to Armok. Fill the pit at the top with any captured creature, pull some levers and water mixed with blood will flow out, along the channels built on each z-level, and probably leading to a waterfall in the arena directly below the shrine. Not sure how far the blood could flow though.
Waterwheels and the central pump stack are completed. Trying to dam the nearby brook in order to make the entire underground area out of glass. Project now halted due to human siege, which was the result of a diplomat following my count into the drowning chamber.

Underground excavation underway. In light of new discoveries regarding ceiling supports, I'm going to have a central ball hanging from the ceiling halfway down instead of a tower. This orb will have water from the surface channeled into it, which will pour out in the cardinal directions as waterfalls.

Man, when I finish this it is so getting visualized and posted.

Going to build a tower in the middle of a carp infested lake. I'm planning on building the first few levels out of green glass, then dropping it into the lake to create the underwater portion. The above-ground section will be made from Obsidian. The lake is fairly small so I managed to get the entire thing in my local map. It's surrounded by rocky wastes, so this tower will be a massive beacon to all those braving the wastelands.

I might be misunderstanding the whole falling part of DF, but I thought falling levels deconstructed as they fell. Anyone tried this before?

Zeg: I just gotta see that in 3dwarf when you are done.

Eruonen: For you fall testing I would be interested to see the difference different surphaces make: loam vs obsidian for example. Also can you do some quick probability tests on somone surviving a fall at a distance they would normally survive but with a single upright spike- ie does the spike auto hit or can they miss it?

I thought so too.
Though natural walls will fall down. This I have noticed.

These are interesting questions. I will definitely test the spike thing soon.
But there is a delay as my testing facility is being besieged. It's no real threat, it just slows down the process. My priority now is building good defences so I don't have to invest in military forces.

I've collapsed a goblin tower by removing the 1st floor before. The outside walls for the 2nd and 3ed levels remained intact, but the rooms that had no support were broken up in the fall. As such, I'm only building a the outer shell before collapsing it.

I think goblin tower walls are made of "natural" (i.e. water+lava) obsidian, not constructed. Did you dig or deconstruct?

All the better.  That just means that instead of merely constructing a shell, he has to construct a double shell with both lava and water pumps to create a "natural" obsidian shell between them, that he would then drop.

It's ten times as complicated, and thus ten times as Dwarfy!
