If you mod yourself infinite steel, why not just use stone in the first place?  It'd be the same amount of ingame work, and wouldn't require screwing with the game from the outside.

Yes, but I decided to save a lot of time by simply modding myself an infinite steel supply.

You are no longer epic.

It matters not how one acquires the medium, but how one carves it. ):-(

But seriously, it will still take a lot of effort just to build it, regardless of materials.

Are you just using steel for fun or what?

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

He is no longer epic, because making the steel from scratch to make this tower would have been a true feat. The logistics of that make my head hurt. Hell, building any construction out of steel is a pain compared to rock, which is what his infinite steel basicly is now. Shiney modded cheat-rock.

Well, replace steel in your mind with flint then, because I surely got plenty of flint lieing around.
In fact, I might just dump the whole steel idea. I thought that it'd look prettier with metal, but steel has exactly the same dark grey colour as flint. :/ Oh well, stone it is.

So heres my big plan for my first Megaproject...

My project is underway. Heres a few screenshots of whats done so far. I would have done 3Dwarf, but glass just looks like rock of course, so it just wasn't cool enough. Use your imagination heh.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/ZBB160885/Extra/Viperarches-Forges.png

First up the forges. First to be built and still being used as a temporary bed chamber and dining room round the edges. I have to admit to using For Each Tile to help the magma fill up. I rather underestimated how fast the magma would evaporate and didn't dig a wide enough channel from the pipe. Above this, going up through the underground z-levels, its more or less an open pit, with the pillars going up and a few glass walkways to get to my farms and such. In the soil layers, I also rewalled all round the edge of the pit in glass.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/ZBB160885/Extra/Viperarches-Entry.png

Heres the ground floor. I haven't quite finished moving everything inside, so the road doesn't have its ramps and the valley wall is still up with my trade depot still outside for now. On the left you can see the brown strip of mud where I was pumping the river diversion while building the glass aqueduect. Pumping it back and walling it off would have been simpler, but I went for a little realism. I also used For Each Tile to give the new channels of the brook outside my fortress thier surface back, just for looks. You can't see the old parts of the brook since I constructed/deconstructed over them to turn them to sand. The dry moat was really an afterthought.

And heres the first floor, only one complete so far. It will eventually be the barracks and archery range, but for now its just storage and a meeting area. I've set the pop cap to 70 at least until I decide if I can handle any more nobles or even the economy. I need to make some rooms to test thier value to see if it might be possible or if I should just turn it off.

The next floor will be food storage and food workshops. Then probably I'll be working as I would in my normal fortresses: finished goods storage, workshops, raw material storage, dining hall and meeting area, then just bedrooms. I'm thinking of tapering the tower as I go up, then having a rooftop garden or something and spliting off into 4 smaller ramparts for the really posh rooms.

is it wood?
that thing is awesome! i am using wood for a smaller megaproject, and it is a pain.
now i have to hate you, because what i thought would be a big megaproject now is just a small tower.

edit: i read your other post, and if i understood well that is green glass. my megaproject is still safe then (because lets say it: if you have magma and sand, green glass is infinite and easy to get.).

but this doesn't mean that the tower and the pit and the magma and everything is really awesome. keep the good work.

Zeg, that looks way cool. Do you have bars or grates in the river to take care of water based invasions? I just see some swimming monster jump in the river, go under the walls, and pop up inside.

Or carp...

Not really a Megaproject...more a kiloproject.

I have hollowed out a magnetite pocket out to the surrounding chert, and I am turning it into a secondary dining hall. I am smoothing the walls and floor, but leaving the room in the shape of the original pocket to give it that "organic" feel so beloved of a younger generation of dwarves.

The furniture is intended as a reflection of the mineral wealth and industrial might of the fortress. There will be no stone or wood used. Just glass and metal, studded with gems. Iron and copper tables and thrones (and statues) will predominate, as that's what I have in bulk, but there will be glass and platinum and aluminum. The ceiling is held up by pillars (actually, 1-tile wall sections) of clear glass (not that it has to be held up at all). I am putting light-wells up through the sand layer above to the surface to fight cave adaptation, and roofing them over with clear glass.

It's not mega, but it's taking a certain focus.

Heheh, yeah there are submerged fortifications in the river channel (and magma channel too). I had one fort without, which had a Kobold thief swim up the water pipe from the river into my drinking pool... but he ran into a Giant Eagle which had apparently had the same idea. A moment that I screenshotted for prosperity:
