My miners and engravers are currently digging out a large 20 z-level deep underground cathedral, but all the rest of my dwarves are rather bored, so I'll get them working on my next project - a 6-floor library. According to my sums (which, as I said before, cannot be trusted), I need 5775 stone, which is no problem anymore - I have over 10,000 gabbro. But I also need 1050 logs. I have 270. Not quite enough...time to piss off the elves!

How are you going to make a Liberry with no books?

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Here is one that I have completed on my old (and best EVER) fort.

It isn't necessarily a megaproject, but it is very complicated and tricky to make in certain situations.

Create a shower to clean your dwarves.

I was sick of all my dwarves being covered in mud, goblin blood, their own blood, and vomit. So I made a pump system that continuously sprayed a healthy dose of 4 level water over the entrance to the dining hall, ensuring everyone would be eventually washed.

The big challenge is dealing with space restraints, and finding an efficient way to keep your dwarves from drowning (nobody drowned in my project, but a few almost did and one almost starved to death when he got caught behind a hole I was digging and couldn't fil back in without flooding my fort  :P).

Anyway, try it. It also gives your dwarves very happy thoughts.

Well, maybe I shouldn't call it a library. I suppose it's more of a...cabinet house...

My current project is to find a method of digging exploratory tunnels which is efficient, aesthetically pleasing and relatively easy to designate.  I haven't yet found one I'm happy with, so I'm working downwards one layer at a time trying different ones out.  Suggestions welcome!

I usually use a grid with boxes 33 on a side (i.e. designate one corridor, hit shift+arrow three times, then just arrow twice, then designate the next one).  It reveals a fairly small percentage of the actual area, but reveals just enough to virtually guarantee that you'll find any veins on that z-level.

I'm actually working on a human fortress with digging restrictions based around this pattern. Except every meeting is a 5x5 room and a single block of unmined area in the middle and the halls were three tiles wide.

I hope to pave over the paths in the earth, turning it into a sewer system. That should make an interesting dungeon.

Currently I am working on a smallish man made island in the middle of a massive lake (the lake will be the entire 6x6 map) and a few Z levels deep. I have the outline of the main island done, with possible plans with other fort islands. So far I have very little dug out :)

You should make a sort of 'national archives' with all different species of animal in cages, includin goblins dwarves elves and humans.

I recently completed a megaproject of sorts. Pics are located at:

I suppose the city in the end will be a megaproject in itself.

I'll just link up the newest update to my fort. It has several 'megaprojects' in it, I suppose.

That's probably one of the best forts I've ever seen. How did you plan it out? Did you just plan it all out in-game, or did you use some outside too like graph paper or something?

Oh. My. God. I could never imagine having the time or patience to even think about building a fort that large! Great job, the Altar to Armok was my personal favorite in it.

Nope, all in-game. I've never used any outside programs to design things, I just kind of build the fort organically as I go.

Edit: Oh, and thank you both.
