I'll just link up the newest update to my fort. It has several 'megaprojects' in it, I suppose.

http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-3609
That's probably one of the best forts I've ever seen. How did you plan it out? Did you just plan it all out in-game, or did you use some outside too like graph paper or something?

Nope, all in-game. I've never used any outside programs to design things, I just kind of build the fort organically as I go.

Edit: Oh, and thank you both.

What do you mean outside programes? I mean, I use paint  ::)

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Well, it's not really a megaproject....

But, I am building a road from the hill right above my fortress to the spot where the caravan comes in every fall, because his wagons couldn't reach me because of of my place being very heavily forested.

Well, unless you somehow think that paint is part of DF, it's an outside program..

A lot of people use Excel or other programs with 'grids' to design things. I don't. It's not like I'm claiming to be better, I just don't happen to build things this way.

Why are you eye-rolling?

I totally agree with you. My strategy of "Diversive Adaption" or "Making it up as we go along" is a fantastic success.

Whenever I use the "make it up as I go along" method, I always wind up wishing I had left somewhere to put the waterfall or something.

Of course, whenever I plan it out beforehand, I always wind up with said waterfall flooding the fortress and drowning everybody in it... :P

Rather than go through the tedium of having my magma workshops and farms on the same level as the map cave river and magma pipe, I'm building a pump system to pump the water and magma up to the entrance of my fort where my workshops will be.

http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-3611-whipjewels

I haven't even gotten a chance to start on living quarters etc for my dwarves, though that'll be happening soon.  I almost have enough iron parts assembled to create my magma pumps.

When I'm making a megaproject I always make it up as I going along, But i mark out an area that I'm going t use.

I have a new semimegaproject.  Magma gives me fear, and a magma pipe near my beautiful fortress gives me Fear, so I'm going to surround the entire pipe with a water sheath, right down to the bottom.  Any accidentally escaping burny stuff won't get far without turning into steam.

Of course, odds are good that construction of the sheath will claim several dwarf lives given that that's what already happened when I tried doing this to the levels around the top of the pipe given the hazardous environment.

I'm now planning to make a sacrificial bi-type arena, it holds 4/7 water on the ground level, for the fishies, and the ground-types are deployed 5 floors above the floor.

And tell me if the 5 floors is too much, I want the foes to die fighting, not drowning as it is eaten by carps.

I'm currently using dtil and obsidian-to-adamantine HFS metal tile conversion to make a tower completely out of adamantine, and leaving my army decked out in bronze.

I just had the first fight in my arena. The arena is on a bridge over the chasm.

The fight was between about 12 goblins, a human and and elf as invaders, vs. about 30 untrained dogs (many of the puppies) a wolf, a cow, two bears, a cougar and a Toad. The invaders won with 2 gobs and the human and the elf surviving. Then a conveniently placed lever allowed me to chasm all the gear and remains as well as the living survivors with only one short job.

Yay for my 30% framerate increase.

30% framerate increase... i wish i could get that. unluckly, butchering the few animals i have won't do any good for me (they are really few and all pets)

i am building a 15 z-level tower, but i don't know if i'll be able to finish it, for 3 reasons

1)FPS. 119 dwarves, a brook, many items. i madee a dam (is that the right word) to stop the brook, but it will last only till the enxt migrant wave comes

2)my plan was to make all floors wooden. problem is that  have cut the last tree on the map. and trees spawn slowly. i need really many logs. is there any way to make traders bring more wagons? (39e)

3) it is HUUUUGE! HUUUUGE. did i already say that it is huge? each floor is 55x17(935 tiles!). there will be 15 floors. it is 14000 tiles! (well, nearer to 13K than 14K. ground level is smaller).
how do i fill all that space???
housing will take about 4-5 floors (i can fit more than 50 dwarves on 3x2 rooms on a floor. but i plan to make a level that has bigger rooms.)
nobles take 1 level. king/consort take 2 floors. workshops take 1 floor. barracks are on ground floor, same for meeting hall. dining room will probably be in one of the housing levels. all this is... 9 floors. it is good, but what about the other 6 floors?
i'll have to think about it. at the moment ideas are : statue garden, zoo, dwarven national park (animals, a brook a lake.... and wooden floor. probably no water because it would be hard to take water up there.
i am open to suggestions if you want to help.

also, i have a question: when i look at my fortress in 3Dwarf, how do i take a picture to upload?

Obsidian to adamantine conversion ?

It's a part of the utilitie, when you activate it, it searches out all obsidian tiles on the map and changes them to HFS metal.
