I've built the lighthouse of alexandria (I'll get some pics up soon), so now I'm preparing to build the mausoleum of maussollos.

Unfortunately, I don't have much choice of building material. According to my sums, I need 648 stones for it. I have 9 phyllite, 13 orthoclase, 24 limestone, 40 gypsum, 169 bauxite, 262 gabbro and about 400 microcline. The only stone I have enough of is mica (Of which I have 717).

By the way, my sums are probably wrong - my second calculation for the lighthouse was 704 stones. I had over 800 phyllite, but I somehow ran out and had to use mica for the floors on the ground.

All mega constructions really should be done with cast in place obsidian.  By that rule I haven't actually built any mega projects.  My water towers and water fall system was made with steel.  My 30x30 obsidian creation chamber doesn't really count for anything.

My mega project (tower inside a magma pipe) is complete. More details and 3Dwarf piccies in this thread http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=24513.msg287995#msg287995

640 Stones does sound awfully low for a "mega" construction...

My ongoing project (which i wouldnt really call mega project either, tho it's a lot of work...) is to completely replace all interior walls/floors in my fortress with obsidian blocks (and of course angrave them afterwards)... So far i spent around ~1200 blocks on redecorating the dining hall, meeting hall and trade depot. I expect to use the double of this amount on the residential areas...

You can't engrave constructed floors and walls :-\

What !?!?!

So you are telling me i need to tear down the whole thing :'(

Well thanks for telling me... My masons are busy building the stuff, so i did not come to try the engraving part yet... You just saved me from building 200 useless obsidian bedrooms....  :'(

Should i tear it down, feel the rooms with magma, drop water on it to create obsidian, dig it out again....
Does it work ?

While not quite a mega project, it is time consuming.  I am setting up a lava and water pump system to go up all the Z levels of my fort, so I can do various things.  Each bedroom has two levers connected to it - one to open a water-holding hatch and another to release said water into a chasm.  Water is also channeled to the skylight between the bedrooms and fort area to cascade down and create lovely mist.  Lava is used to keep a few puddles from freezing for fishing/turtling as well as keeping the main entrance bridge running over it.

And my favorite idea: I've built all my coffins out of bauxite.  When the deceased is buried, I open a hatch to let magma into the room and fill it up.  It seems very dwarfish to me. :)

nice idea!
i'll do that with nickel coffins.
but i hope never to use them... i am in a 7 dwarf fort, and i am not going to let any migrant in.

Can you build coffins on draw bridges? or maybe just build a 3x5 tile floor jutting off then collapse it when it becomes full with bodys.

Bridges count as a building, so you can't build coffins (another "building") on them.  You can, however, use the bridge to allow access to a platform held up by a single, lever-linked support.

Holy crap. I really want to make a magma lake now.

Maybe I'll flood my entire valley and just keep it that way, but I don't think I have enough magma.

I have now given up on my previous 'cube in a hole' megaproject (http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-3555-yellowbanners) and I am now working on a new, completely above ground lake castle. There will be no underground mining what-so-ever. To obtain stone, my only digging will be on the surface to landscape the large artificial lake. After all the lake digging is finished, my dwarves can remove all of the stone in the lake (for building purposes) and then channel water into it from a brook or a stream.

At the moment I'm looking for a spot to start work on, I need a 3x3 area with a small corner of a brook, no aquifer, a soil layer and then a limestone layer and it has to be completely flat. It should be pretty easy for me to find so I am not to worried about that, I am more worried about how bad this project is going to be on my FPS.

Edit] I have drawn out a plan that I might aswell post here:

1) Smaller islands - Just an aesthetic thing I thought might look nice.
2)Gatehouse - The gate house will be out on an island with its only access being a bridge from the castle and a bridge from the mainland. I will also have a third bridge that will give my dwarves access to the two towers from within the safety of the castle
3)Keep - The keep will be were most of my dwarves work, sleep and eat.
4)Courtyard - The courtyard will contain a barracks, a farming area, food workshops, trading area and a butchery/tannery/leatherworks building.
5) I only want a small bit of brook on the map as it is all i need. This brook corner will fuel my lake with water after its excavation and clearance has taken place.
6) A road will lead all the way into my keep from the outer edges of the map.

The key to making nobles happy with inexpensive building materials is size.
I have done this with my nobles before by building masive wooden rooms.

Sure, but when you're building a fortress exclusively out of glass on a no-magma map, big rooms aren't exactly trivial. Floor, walls and ceiling, even a 5x5 room is 122 blocks of glass. And when you start needing to build rooms that size just for your Mayor's dining room...you start to see how daunting it can be.

not sure your maths is quite right there, wheres the figure of 122 coming from?, a 5x5 room needs a 7x7 outer wall, which is 24 blocks, a 5x5 floor, which is 25 blocks, and a 5x5 ceiling, another 25 blocks, grand total 74 blocks
