I'm currently working on the first project that I've really intended as a "megaproject", rather than merely a large, but entirely practical, construction effort.  While it's downright puny compared to the things that you guys are describing, I don't think it's that bad for a first try.

At any rate, it's a pair of towers 12 z-levels high, each with a 3-wide walkway spiraling around it in opposite directions.  At the top, I'll connect them together, and once the scaffolding is removed, they will only be supported by the pair of 3x1 walls that the bottom-floor ramps are up against.  When all is said and done, I'll have the two big spirals with caravans (and attackers!) going up one, crossing over, and going back down the other.  Protecting the entire compound is a square moat 30 tiles to the side with a wall on top of it made of green glass blocks (yes, I have magma).  As an added bonus, the whole thing is getting rid of a lot of rock because I'm building the towers with nothing but blocks, and thus I have four workshops going 24/7 churning out blocks.

I eventually plan to expand the compound to include such things as an outdoor meeting hall, un-ambushable lumber zones, and an outdoor-crop farm.  Not that I need more farms, but still, if I'm walling off huge chunks of the landscape, I'm damn well going to plant a few whip vines in it.

I just found a nice embark spot where a mountain PEAK is next to a valley, and is accessable for embark, and has contact with all civs.

Do you mind posting the seed? I been looking for some extreme z-levels.

Created in DF v0.28.181.40d.

Whats this my mega construction idea hasent been done yet?! I try to do this pretty much at every fort basically i make a below ground fortress with all the stone used to make a sprawling multi Z level above ground keep but thats nothing fancy, the magma and water towers on either side creating a cascade of water and magma on either side of the main entrance, now thats my fancy! I always loved the idea of a water fall so i've always strived to create them but so far i have never been able to due to... complications(golden colossus, 5 gobbo sieges in a row, mass starvation and the best one yet was when literally the entire ground collapsed).

My current fortress was made purely with this in mind, 3x3 with a brook and magma pipe and its completely flat so it counters the drain of running water and magma, i also plan on completely draining and capping my spare magma vent to further cut down on lag. Just think of what you can do with a huge supply of water 8 z levels high.... hahahahah wonder what would happen to anything on the receiving end at the bottom. My current problem is i ran out of friggin seeds and the merchants are getting slaughtered or passing me up but my fishing is going full tilt hehe lets hope i can get enough before winter cause no more fishing during winter.......

Alright pumps suck REALLY REALLY BAD canceled this project in a rage when i realized how much friggin trouble it is the hook up 8 pumps over each other- they really should pump water up Z levels damnit! i mean it should require extra power but trying to make multiple pumps with power is insane. I really wanted a friggin water fall to damnit! i had this one map which was so damn amazing i cant believe i deleted it:( a natural 7 Z level water fall on the side of a volcano, i was going to build giant rooms under it so the dwarves could look outside and see the thundering waterfall.... URGE TO START ANEW RISEING MUST RESIST!

Stacking pumps is pretty easy once you've done it once or twice.  Just look at the pump page on the wiki for how to do it, and run some power to the thing.

I am i a new spot that i is totally awesome, i just got a magma glass furnace going and i'm trying to make giant towers that look like this,

out of glass to house all of my dwarves, and i'm thinking about expanding the design next time i use it. It works well for everything except nobles rooms plus it's a tower. The only problem i'm having is producing enough glass, whats a good sand collector to glass maker combination?

From what I can tell, a thumbs up from having a legendary miner hammered to death because he didn't smelt him any adamantine coffins.

A couple more pictures from my fort:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The temple - preeeetty much finished, I just have to remove the scaffolding. You can't see all the furniture and what's inside, but it contains 180 wooden chairs (Despite deforesting half the map and killing all of their traders, the elves are still friendly), 28 rock statues, and those gaps in the walls are actually gem windows (some as cheap as brown jaspers, others as precious as rubies).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the limestone arch. It was originally just going to be two towers, but then I decided to create a walkway in between them, to turn it into a single arch.

11747 rocks are used in buildings, and I have 3576 left. My dwarves are mostly just idling, so any ideas for future constructions will be appreciated - but no running water.
221 dwarves + running water = :(

Wow.. those are pretty impressive, Ryo!

Here are a few from my fort:

Main overview of the aboveground fortress.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The military wing/'castle' which sits over the southern fort entrance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The 'Altar of Armok'. The holes in the middle drop into an 18-level deep shaft that is used for tossing goblins and other undesirables to their death.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The watertower with the connected pump tower.

dullard, i think i hate you. after seeing that, my huge tower will not be enough for me, and i'll have to build more :(
well, i had already planned the gabbro colossus , the granite pyramid and maybe something else. but your things will probably look better than anything i'll be able to build.
i could try with the giant gabbro-limestone-kaolinite mushroom. but 3dwarf won't make it look as good as it should be.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

So I've been thinking. I'm going to build a dwarven society with castes. Waterdwarves, bred from the silent depths of the deeper mountainhomes and the water that lay beneath. I'll be building on a rocky area with z-level variation and a permanent water source. If I can, I'll get a lake and a creek. The fortress will be assembled in two tiers. The outer tier will be for the lesser caste. Save raised islands for workshops, stockpiles and other necessities (I don't know if dwarves will accept waterlogged beds; experimentation required), the entirety of this tier will be kept at no less than 3/7 and no more than 5/7 water depth. This tier will provide the bulk of the industry for the fortress.

The second tier of the fortress will be for the greater caste. The rooms will be of a far greater value, stone walls smoothed and engraved, masterwork furniture, a zoo, a number of meeting halls--a life of finery and subtlety. The workshops here will be primarily artistic, to give the greater dwarves freedom to express their souls. Again, save the stockpiles and necessities, the fort will be kept flooded--at a depth, this time, of never less than 5/7 and never above 6/7.

The purity of a dwarf's soul will be judged by his unity with the Almighty Deep, the Sea that Spawns us All. (They may only transmigrate into the greater caste upon attaining the ability to swim and swim well, at which point they are discretely shuffled into the second tier.)

If this is successful, the next step will be to adapt. Not the dwarves--they have adapted to the water. No, they're going to adapt the world, and the Great Sea will be All. (Map will be flooded with a few 'docks' and minor roads to permit traders--and siegers.)
