Hmm in the face of my first siege ever (especally considering I've been playing for a few months) I'm going to start building an area where when the goblin siege comes in I can close it behind them... built out of steel of course.

i started a megaproject. not hard, but the work to do is big.
an aboveground city, but not a fort or just a city: a city-tower. a huge tower that goes from the ground to the sky.  only underground things are stockpiles. at the moemnt it is a building , i'll build a wall around it.
later i'll put a paved road on the empty space to make it inside. the tower is more than 400 tiles. rock walls, wooden floors. i have to cut half map to make only the first floor. and later i'll expand it, when i'll make rock walls (at the moment it is wooden. i had to build a room as soon as i could).

i'll need several thousands of logs, many years and dwarves, a lot of rock (that i get by channelling, so it is still above ground).
what i will get will be a huge tower (about 55x15x15), with the first floor being much bigger because farms, trade depot and brooks are there. houses for all the dwarves (nobles will get a place too... useful nobles will get furniture, unuseful nobles will get a bridge if you understand what i mean)
at the end, i could close the doors, and the tower would still be able to live with more than 100 dwarves inside (don't know exactly how many)

edit: of course there iwll be also elven sieges later. in the first year i cut hundreds of trees!

My biggest megaproject was where the entire fort was just a huge power plant, specifically a dwarven water reactor that, of course, powered itself.  Man, I wish I'd gotten images of it, because it produced over 3000 units of power, and took years to build with dedicated mechanics.  The fort eventually died when the floodgate infinite water bug caused a pressure buildup in the reactor core and a wayward drip of water from the cistern sump found it's way back along the power connector and touched the reactor...

it was all over in just a couple frames...

Haha, i like your terminology sukasa. Guess your paranoid about building a lot of emergency shutdown switches, floodgate systems and the like in your new forts?

Right now I'm building a gigantic limestone block ziggurat. It's 20x10 and I only just completed the first floor. I dug some channels in the very middle to make a nice little horseshoe shaped reflecting pool (for which I had to drain a pond or two) surrounding the eventual grand staircase, flanked with stone statues. On the next floor up I'm going to make a zoo out of whatever critters I can catch. Beyond that I haven't thought much since it took me over a year just to build the ground floor with my amateur labor force. (This fortress was started with the purpose of making a huge pointless monument) I figure I'll continue building up, lining each sucessive floor with statues made of increasingly valuable metals and when I hit the top floor I'll turn it into a decadent tomb filled with whatever artifacts I have for my leader.

Im currently biulding a tower INSIDE a magma pipe, extensive pumping was needed to empty the pipe, but now construction of the 12x12 tower has begun, only accessible through a tunnel at the base of the magma pipe, it will rise out of the crater and eventually my monarchs bedroom/throne room will be at the top. Build a fortress designed to train military geniuses then drive them mad.  Then, once your legendary warriors go berserk, cage 'em up and put the cages by the entrance.  Then your only defense will be the berserk psycho-dwarfs.  Bonus points if they wear all bone armor.  Super bonus points if all the bone armor is made from the bones of the dwarfs who went melancholy instead of berserk.

The key to making nobles happy with inexpensive building materials is size.
I have done this with my nobles before by building masive wooden rooms.

Sure, but when you're building a fortress exclusively out of glass on a no-magma map, big rooms aren't exactly trivial. Floor, walls and ceiling, even a 5x5 room is 122 blocks of glass. And when you start needing to build rooms that size just for your Mayor's dining room...you start to see how daunting it can be.

Here are a few 3dwarf images of my projects in my current fort:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
1) Battlements - made out of limestone, fortifications all around, 2 levels tall, with each tower being 4 levels tall. There is a drawbridge into the fortress, but it doesn't show up of 3dwarf.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
2) Colosseum - built out of phyllite, creatures are contained by floodgates, which are all opened with specific levers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
3) Pyramid - built out of limestone (with a native gold block top), contains the coffins for my original seven dwarves, none of which have died yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
4) Temple (Under construction) - Built out of phyllite, but no progress is being made at the moment, because I'm currently fending off the 3rd siege of this year (there have also been 2 megabeast arrivals), and it's only early Autumn. I'm not sure whether I should count my blessings, or just count my narrow iron helms.

There's also a large limestone arch over the road, but I forgot to get a picture and now I can't be bothered....I'll probably get one eventually.

Actually, it was the only shutoff device.  Unfortunately, it was the only shutoff device.

I propose a Dwarven Museum of Natural History.

Features include:

Neoclassical design, grand staircase and columns for main entrance.

Hall of minerals.  Display cases with glass windows that hold every sample of rock/mineral/rough gem/ore known to dwarf.

Hall of biodiversity.  display cases with every animal skeleton.  Bonus points if small areas of natural surface soil can be used in cases to give a 'realistic' setting for the creatures.

Hall of Dwarven Culture.  Fantastic artifacts, intricate trade goods, masterful sculptures.

Food court.

A couple more pictures from my fort:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The temple - preeeetty much finished, I just have to remove the scaffolding. You can't see all the furniture and what's inside, but it contains 180 wooden chairs (Despite deforesting half the map and killing all of their traders, the elves are still friendly), 28 rock statues, and those gaps in the walls are actually gem windows (some as cheap as brown jaspers, others as precious as rubies).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the limestone arch. It was originally just going to be two towers, but then I decided to create a walkway in between them, to turn it into a single arch.

11747 rocks are used in buildings, and I have 3576 left. My dwarves are mostly just idling, so any ideas for future constructions will be appreciated - but no running water.
221 dwarves + running water = :(

I just found a nice embark spot where a mountain PEAK is next to a valley, and is accessable for embark, and has contact with all civs.

I selected an embark zone that is 3x5 and includes both the mountain peak and the valley floor.  its over 120 z-levels tall, and I have carved the enterance to the fort at ground level.  There should be a water source in there somewhere from a cave river, but Armok only knows what level its at.

I intend to dig from the bottom up all the way to the peak, building my fortress within the mountain.  and then build some sort of tower or structure on the peak. maybe i'll carve away the outside of the mountain and leave smooth stone battlements.

I have already had one tame camel wander to the top.  I need to check the legends screen to see if it got credit for the ascent.  maybe i'll build a barracs up there and let dwarfs spar on the peak.

Whats this my mega construction idea hasent been done yet?! I try to do this pretty much at every fort basically i make a below ground fortress with all the stone used to make a sprawling multi Z level above ground keep but thats nothing fancy, the magma and water towers on either side creating a cascade of water and magma on either side of the main entrance, now thats my fancy! I always loved the idea of a water fall so i've always strived to create them but so far i have never been able to due to... complications(golden colossus, 5 gobbo sieges in a row, mass starvation and the best one yet was when literally the entire ground collapsed).

My current fortress was made purely with this in mind, 3x3 with a brook and magma pipe and its completely flat so it counters the drain of running water and magma, i also plan on completely draining and capping my spare magma vent to further cut down on lag. Just think of what you can do with a huge supply of water 8 z levels high.... hahahahah wonder what would happen to anything on the receiving end at the bottom. My current problem is i ran out of friggin seeds and the merchants are getting slaughtered or passing me up but my fishing is going full tilt hehe lets hope i can get enough before winter cause no more fishing during winter.......

Do you mind posting the seed? I been looking for some extreme z-levels.
