My new area is a nicely sloped volcano. Its peak is at the south. To its west, there's a long chasm running almost the entire length of the map, terminating at the north. At the west edge of the map, there's a sunken brook. It starts in the middle and runs all the way to the north edge. There's also an underground river and HFS yet to be discovered.
The plan is to make it a diverse attraction, comprised of several sub-forts built and abandoned over time.
The first step would be to dam the brook, route it through some water wheels, dump it into a few reservoirs and have them drain into the chasm as necessary.
I've never done anything like this before, so I'd like some guidance. The step by step plan, as far as I see it, is:
1. Dig out the foundations for the waterwheels, the reservoirs and the drains.
2. Install and hook up floodgates and waterwheels.
3. Breach the brook, let it flow freely into the system.
4. Dump some magma near the tap in order to force all the water through the new system.
Am I missing anything? Am I steering for disappointment or a massive disasters?

You're trying to redirect the river?
Construct a row of pumps over the width of the brook with the output to the side that you dont want to drain. connect them to a waterwheel and now the pumps will flood that side.
Could try that. just keep in mind that when the flooded area reaches 7/7 the pumps will stop so do whatever you need to do on the drained side early or have the new river direction ready.

I believe I have a new project.

In order to spearhead the invasion of the Marcab Confederacy, my Dwarves are taking to it to construct a giant statue of Longcat. Be very afraid.

Did you see that on the Underwater Fort story thread?  I forgot the actual name (started with an "R") but I posted this idea there.  I don't think I was the first to come up with it, it's just that the post was somewhat recent . . .

Basically I'm asking if you came up with that or what.
No, I didn't see it on the other thread.  I'm not too terribly surprised that somebody came up with it before me though.

The original project was called Rulroth. I eventually ended up scrapping it out of boredom; I realized due to the way islands are handled there would have been no invasions or anything to keep it interesting...I like me fighting after alls. :P

Fighting is the reason I'm actually taking a break from DF for the moment.  In four straight forts I've put a LOT of thought and effort into ridiculously convoluted sophisticated defense systems, only for the goblins to give up and stop sending even remotely credible siege forces.  I just couldn't take that any more.

It would still work on the coast, if the lack of fighting was the problem.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

The lack of fighting was one problem; the issue is finding a good area that is on the coast and has a magma source...I'm trying again, and hoping it works. :P

I'm trying to build a tower surrounded by an artificial lake, so far I'm half way through block-laying and it's been roughly 10 years (although terrain manipulation took a fair bit of time). It's no where near as impressive as an undersea fortress but it will have to do  :P.

Creating a sacrificial alter, the sacrifices are a 7z tall tower, that is filled with many valuable objects, and nobles, sent down into the dark depths where they believe there is a portal to Armok's dwellings.

Right now I have begun construction of a massive cistern (first design will be a 20x20, and about 5 Z levels deep) and will have a central tower for monitoring of the water level. I will also have under water rooms and plan to have the vault underground too.

Are you isolating your fortress?
