Helm's Deep would actually be pretty easy, since it's just a pretty standard round keep with a big fortified wall thrown out to one side. The problem would be finding a region with the right surrounding geography (a flat "bay" surrounded by cliffs on three sides)in the first place.

Carve it out of the rock Dwarf! For that is what we all do...

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Minas tirith would need giant, 30z level cliffs

For my first mega project I'm making a 18 z-level waterfall in a massive hollowed out chamber.  To get from the top to the bottom the dwarves will descend one of two quarter spiral staircases that are each 9 steps wide.  At the bottom will be a pool with acess ramps for swimming.  All the walls will be engraved from top to bottom, and there will be nobles rooms with windows overlooking the entire sight from various z-levels, along with various dining rooms and rock gardens, maybe zoos.

See my thread related to Rulroth: The Submerged Domain

My megaproject involves constructing a massive undersea lair, based on clear-glass domes, with airlocks, diving elevators, undersea rovers (using gears to represent wheels), etc. The only way into the dome would be a glass tube bridge separated by multiple airlocks; the system will be fully self-sufficient (save for a single magma vent which can be channeled), and capable of internal expansion and performing construction projects at sea. Eventually, the entire island will be effectively gone save for the single magma cap, around which another dome will be constructed around.

I could always place the elves in the waterfall channel and see how they like diving 18 floors into a 1 z-level swimming pool  XD

Agreed. If you're going to flood the nobles' quarters, they ought to be there, ready to drown. Now you have muddy floors AND nobles...

What went wrong?

My current fortress, with its Dwarven Pit god cult:

Right now I just dump people into the pit as sacrifices every season, to satisfy the pit god so someday it does not crawl from its home to devour me. This is not epic enough. No, the pit gods demand more.

So, I must build a spire from the very bottom of the pit reaching high into the sky, with a tunnel down the middle that sacrifices can be thrown. It will, of course, need a proper alter and an executioner.

I havent decided on the bridge drop method, the "pit" method (which precludes immigrant sacrifices), or the toilet method, where I can see them struggle against the whirlpool before they are pulled into the depths, with a stairway on the opposite side so they have hope for escape. Or whether I would let them escape...

Anyways, after THAT's finished and I start a new fort (the old one destroyed by the pit god some stupid dwarf angered of course) my REAL megaproject will begin:

Hollow out an entire map. EVERY single z-level. Minimize building to neccesseties until then, since it will all be destroyed shortly.

Once complete, move every dwarf underground and then collapse the stairway. NOW the project can begin.

Now I build the undercity, with temples and buildings and towers, as if it was a surface city, but underground. It should be sprawling, think of the city from eternal darkness --- Including the 9 "power towers" and a single central spire.

This spire will be the last part built, and will come up from the ground high enough to penetrate the surface world once more. Then trade and such can begin normally again, my underground civilization having finally "made contact" with the surface dwellers.

Hopefully, I'll be able to do this on a map with a magma pool and a river, for more fun and founding the city in a flooded water/magma pit.

I got a great idea, it includes nobles, pressure towers, ejection systems, and an arena.

When you get a noble, that is annoying, make four extremely massive water generator/creator/cannon combo things to make the thrust needed to blast the noble up and out of a spire, down a 5z drop down into an arena with as much demons able to destroy the fortress, and the only defense are the tall walls, which are extremely resilient, filled with ballistae, guaranteed ultimate laughs, and dramatic e-peen size increase.
