Dyed leather
« on: September 09, 2008, 01:05:16 pm »

Quick suggestion: The ability to Dye leather in the dyers workshop.

Realistically, there's no reason leather can't be dyed as well as fabric. And being able to raise the quality of leather items more would be nice, considering how worthless they usually are compared to everything else.

I'm pretty sure that dying leather would require different types of dye, at least realistically. And I'm not sure leather was ever dyed nearly as much as cloth to begin with, even if/when it was.

Well, possibly. Although from a little reading, it WAS done during the middle ages, and with similar stuff to dying fabric. Plant dyes, berries, etc.

Here is an interesting article with medieval recipes (and...not in modern english, so it's a tough read.)

To be realistic, tanning leather is a very involved process, requiring lots of materials. For now, though, I'd just be happy to have some nice dyed leather to make things out of.

That's a pretty good find, actually. Luckily, the Middle English (or so) isn't that bad. It's still pretty intelligible and seems like it was well-written in the first place.

So I guess dying leather would make sense, although I'm not sure if the same dyes should be used or not. This is assuming, of course, that it doesn't produce any game-balance issues.
