Creature Raws Quibbles List
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:00:32 pm »

[EDIT:REVAMPED_OP]  ;)

I'm collecting a list of minor quirks and quibbles in the creature raws to help toady identify the little things. Please feel free to contribute observations.

List of quibbles about various creature raws:
  • Satyrs have no eyes.
  • Horses, donkeys and mules have no maximum age, and are thus effectively immortal.
  • Giant cave spiders and giant desert scorpions should probably have 6-8 eyes, like a regular spider/scorpion. This one's a little subjective of course. They could alternatively use the already existing [BODY:4EYES] in addition to their two eyes to indicate that the left and right eyes are the big ones while the other 4 are smaller ones at the corners of the head.
  • Gray squirrels don't have the [MUNDANE] tag despite being real animals.
  • Snailmen don't drop shells.
This one is probably intentional since the tag only produces vermin sized shells. One solution could be to have it leave a 'large shell' which you can break into a stack of 'shell pieces' which can then be used in crafting/armor. That way you can have shells of different size for different creatures. Would require crafting respecting the number of items in a stack to be worthwhile of course.
  • Humanoids should have a kick attack. Perhaps as a secondary attack. Would be nice if it had higher priority than biting, but lower than punching.
  • Crocodilians and other amphibious creatures should have a better swim speed since they are designed for swimming.
  • Antmen drop bones and skulls upon rotting, despite being arthropods. Also, they don't have the [CHITIN] tag so they have 'leather'.
  • Mussels and oysters should have the [HASSHELL] tag because, well they have shells.
  • Cave swallows (not the giant ones) should have [PET] instead of [PET_EXOTIC] since there's really nothing unique about them compared to the other vermin sized birds.
  • Cheetahs and giant cheetahs don't have increased speed despite having [PREFSTRING:speed], kinda contradictory.
  • Warthogs should have tusks and use them in combat.
  • [BODY:ARMS_STANCE] should have the [STANCE] tags on the hands instead of the upper arms. They're walking on their shoulder blades or something right now. The intention is probably to let them knuckle walk without hands but you can't really knuckle walk on bloody stumps since you can't walk with your feet cut off.
  • Snailmen have legs, while logic would have them have a similar body type to slugmen.

I never noticed that. Probably just an oversight.

Just turn a blind eye to the situation. I'm sure the satyrs won't see.

"I see." said the blind man to his deaf wife as he picked up his hammer and saw.

Giant cave spiders have 2 eyes while they should have 8 like spiders have.

Oh yeah, I mean, GCS need beefing up. More like Giant Nerf Spider, amiright?
None of these beat the fact that, in D.F., horses are immortal.

They don't have a upper-age limit, so they can outlast the elves.

Mules and Donkeys as well. Elves don't have upper age limit either, so no-ones gonna be outlasting each other there, barring unrelated occurrence.

I think i'll add it to the OP.

My theory is the reason they have no age limit is to prevent them from sudden death syndrome while hauling goods in a caravan.

I've had my liason die from old age, wouldn't it suck if the humans sieged you because their wagon pulling horses died of old age on the way out?

The horses aren't historical figures, so why not just code it so that young horses are spawned instead of old ones? Especially once we have actual caravans coming from sites.

I don't think number of eyes is a power stat. Actually, wouldn't giving them six more eyes make it three times easier to get a crit on one?

Four times.

2 -> 8 => 2 * 4

I figured it as the more eyes they have, the harder it will be to blind them. But you point stands.
