I say we call them Elfs. That way the elves will visit and overhear dwarves negotiating the trade of a hundred elfs for some cheese. They would then be shocked and appalled that their brethren are not only being kept as slaves, but are worth next to nothing.

I like ucat.  ;D Well, as a name for the currency. But limâr would also work, because that's the dwarven word for "wealth".
The dwarven word for "scrap" is gasir, but scrap sounds much cooler.
Or we could just call them turtles!

Now we need a good consistant slur for the elves themselves.
How about hippie? Or tree hugger, which would be something like "dák enur" in Dwarfish.

In mind I always called them "value units", as when trading with caravans its not a currency per se just some comparison messurement created to allow *commensurability* for the goods for goods trade, just to take a scientific freak word :)

Eh, until you mint money, there's no currency, and every piece of trade is done through barter.  So, unitless is probably the way to go, then to whatever coins you mint afterwards.

Still, most of the names suggested sound pretty cool.
Kopeks, dwarfbucks, turtles, rounds...
I'd suggest Bottlecaps, especially if you're playing the Fallout mod.  Scrip is another cool one.

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

I always found the Fallout concept of people carrying around thousands of bottle caps as a currency absurd. Why would anyone put any value on a bottle cap? Someone could go dig around in a city dump and be the richest man around.

I guess it kinda fits with the game's goofy setting, though.

Instead of turtles, how about just "shells". In many fortresses, I could see that being the initial currency until the metal industry started up. After that, it could still be the basis for value comparison.

Turtles seem nice to me, and Urists as well. "Turtle" seems to be the median after browsing through all posts.

I appreciate monies as an Invader Zim reference

I like the sound of Dwarfmarks.  Turtles or shells is also kinda catchy.

I really like the idea of value being based on alcohol, seeing as it is one of the pillars of dwarf society.  Calling the unit of exchange beers isn't bad...  How about another word related to booze?

Drinks
Quaffs
Steins
Guzzle
Tipples
Brannigans
Drunks
Spirits
Skols
Jiggers
Proof
Grog
Pints

Feel free to add any more fun words related to booze.

My vote goes to monies.

Easier to type than Dwarfbucks, less confusing than having to say "turtles (currency)", and less ridiculous than Limul or Gusil when every other term of measurement in the game is in English (like those idiots who replace all their stupids with "baka").

Constantly saying monies has been scientifically proven to get you laid. In fact, demographics show that people with lots of monies get laid more often by higher quality lay-ers than people without. You don't want your dwarves to go unlaid, do you?

Calling your ☼ "Hours" would have a nice double meaning; dwarf-hours of (unskilled)labour being a possible in-character approximation of value, while at the same time poking fun as the countless hours DF has stolen from each our lives.

dwarfbucks and monies sound way too cheesie for me.

In my head, its just coins. Lim[:alpha:]l fits my standards just fine.

..As a side note, what is that final vowel? it changes in most posts here.

Exactly.  The dwarven word for shell is "kerlåg" which sounds good, so we could treat it like "moose" with a unary singular/plural form: e.g. 200 kerlåg (or 200 kerlag) and 1 kerlåg.
