Name That Currency!
« on: September 07, 2008, 10:56:31 am »

So I've heard many, many names for our little dwarven currency.
Among them: Dwarfbucks, bucks, dollars, turtles, stars, masterworks (it IS the masterwork symbol, after all)
I'm partial to calling them ☼s.  You know why?  That's what they are.
So, what do you call them?

Coppers or Monies (my favorite).

How about Limul. (from Toady's dwarven language, word for gold, same spelling is plural for golds).

Or Osram (fortune, or fortunes, the one used for wealth - not luck)
:)

I generally use monies, but i'm liking Limul. If we happen to adopt that so everyone knows what the hell people are talking about, i'd be ok with it =P

I have a particular dislike for the term "monies", so I tend to use Crowns or Coins or somesuch.  Coppers work as well, and I think someone suggested Turtles before.  I suppose you could call them Shells, if that's your fancy.

Dwarfbucks also work for me.  Limul seems a bit odd since a gold coin would then be worth 15 gold, but it does sound somewhat less ridiculous than Gusil (copper).

The dwarven word for wealth apparently has an accent character in it, so that's out...

EDIT:  I think it's "Limír".

Wealth is Limâr.

I like Limul better, though :)

Or Osram, abbreviated Os? I have 20Os :P Although, that looks a lot like "I have 200s"

Pfft, lets just call it coins.

The DF languages really need to be fleshed out, I never really paid attention to how many words they are missing. No words for Dwarf, Elf, or Human - what do they call eachother, exactly? No words for coin or currency. No words for most of the material types. No word for toy. Thousands of things missing. They don't even have a word for bag - now wonder the dwarves had so much trouble organizing bags - they don't even have words to express the idea of a bag, or even container.

Dwarfish for "human" is "tall person". Dwarfish for "elf" is "tree person". And so on.

More seriously, agglutinative languages really work that way. You have a base set of words, and anything that isn't in that set is expressed by combining words from that set. German works this way, for example. "Science" in German is "Wissenschaft", which I believe translates more or less as "knowmanship".

Except that 'person' doesn't exist as a word either :)

I guess you just call them "Tall" and "Tree", but that gets a big confusing...

Dwarf A: "Thirty Trees are attacking!!" Dwarf B: "Oh shit, I knew this day would come! Call the woodcutters!" Dwarf A: "No, I mean the Trees that walk around and shoot at you with bows!" Dwarf B: "Armok help us, the trees have bows now?!"

I like monies as a sorta Invader Zim reference, or failing that, ☼.

Of course, I also spelled human as hunam as a Star Control reference, even on my High School English Exam some years back. And still do, more often than not.
