It could be that that area hasn't cooled down yet, so the temperature is extremely high.

Turn off temperature :p

It could be that the temperature for those squares 'keeps' for the game.  I dont really know because my fortress died out because of it, but when I had fires the walls next to them seemed to count as warms stone and as far as I can tell stayed that way whether or not there was fire.  or It could last a couple of seasons or so.

UPDATE: Tower construction complete, waiting for magma to refill the pipe. Magma didnt flow off the edge of the map like anticipated giving me a giant lava lake. Will biuld higher and more elaborate levels once other projects are done. Turning temperature off didnt help my dangerous terrain spam, but did help the deaths, A LOT. I will take 3Dwarf pictures once the tower is finished, could someone please link me to a versiont hat works with 40c????? It would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks for everyone who gave usefull information

Hishan, For your amusement, turn on temperature again and see all the dwarves that was exposed to lava self combust ^^

I've been doing something similar to what you've done. Though i dumped water on the lava, chaneled one level and then dumped more water. repeat for 26Z.
Now im waiting for my 30x30x26 hole to refill with lava :)

Oh thats a sweet idea, better than mine. I instantly thought START TEH PUMPS. But i turned temperature back on long ago and it seems to have sorted out the anomalous deaths, either way this tower is pretty much complete, ive biult out of the caldera into open air now.

Now im curious how many pumps you actually needed to get rid of all the lava, as it would probably been a good idea to drain from the bottom level directly with the pumps and when the remaining lava is satisfactory, dump water on it so the dwarves can work safely. 26 levels was rather exhausting to excavate. dump water, channel, ramp & repeat.. would have been better without the "warm wall" pauses as one could just mass designate then.

though before i excavated the pipe i was 'leveling' out the surface of my mountain by cooling lava in the holes. how come this game inspires me to do so much work with the simple reason "i felt like it".

I used 4 pumps in a line, that pump the magma up 8 z levels, i didnt start at the very bottom, i wated the tower to hover in mid pipe.

Okay. Now you've inspired me to try something similar. even though im quite sure i wont ever play the map long enough to actually complete my endeavour.

My current map was quite gold heavy so now i intend to construct a golden tower starting at 3z from the bottom. i will probably carve away about 4-5 levels on the top of the mountain to make it an even surface.

Even surfaces are for elves. Building into the mountain is civilization!
Well, at least dwarven civilization.

It's quite dwarven to level a whole mountain, dig down 20z, fill it with a tower in gold surrounded by lava.

It's also dwarven to build elaborate death traps that don't work.  :'(
