Do magma pipes refill?

Do magma pipes refill? And if so, how fast?

I have a plan for an ambitious project, and need to know if this is the case.

Pipes refill.
Pools don't.
From what I have tested with, they only refill slowly though.

Slow is good, I plan to biuld a tower inside a magma pipe. that comes out the crater. I was going to pump out the magma then pump back in. But since they refill, i'll just pump it in the opposite direction of my fort and let it sort itself out.

If you have access toa  river you may want to consider using it to turn the magma into obsidian instead of pumping so much. once you've carved your tower (which in bonus will be obsidian yeah) you channel the extra bits and let it refill.

As I understand it, magma refilling works by spawning several bits of 1/7 magma at the top of the pipe. This could make construction of your tower difficult, let alone living in it afterwards.

I'm fairly certain it's done by the bottom.  If you look down at the very bottom, it's not Open Space but something completely different.  I haven't had a magma pipe in ages, so I don't remember what it is, but it's there.

It's "Magma Flow".

Yeah thats right. At the bottom is a tile called "Lava flow". Theres also a "magma flow" tile, depending on wether the tile is outside or inside oddly. The pipe fills faster than I thought, and Im currently expanding my pumps to cope with this.

On the subject of strange magma behavior I have found the magma seems to spit plumes of 1/7 magma into the air when the pipe is half full! This is more like a real volcano, (since mine is on top of a conical hill anyway) and makes me happy inside. Although tower construction will be.............interesting! Ill post maps when im done

UPDATE: I had to replace the bottom 4 pumps, due to the wooden parts wearing out and breaking. These have been replaced with steel counterparts. After this setback major pumping has commenced. One year has passed, and 4 Z-levels have been drained into the valley basin (which is looking awesome full of magma btw). Two more z-levels and it will be level with my main fortress level and construction will begin in earnest. I dare not drain the full pipe, I fear my magma pumps would overflow, and the valley can only hold so much.

This is what I was referring to when I said that refill works by spawning 1/7ths of magma at the top of the pipe. As I understand it, the 1/7ths don't care a whit if they spawn inside or outside a building, so you're going to have trouble keeping your fortress drained, let alone usable.

Hmmmmm this will be interesting. My tower may have to have checkerboard floors to let out accumulating magma, as for actual usage I was planning on housing my nobles in it :P.

3Dwarf screens, please?  :o
I would If i could find the latest version of 3dwarf

I just thought of a new torture device. Pump out the magma and build a room where the magma used to be. Make it so the only way in is through a hole, and pit anything you don't like. BBQ.

UPDATE: Pumping has finished and the first three layers of the tower are done! Lava kept leaping up at my dwarves causing over 20 deaths in the resulting fires. But now the first few layers are done, this threat is almost over. But cilamity! At the entrance to my tower dwarves keep dropping dead, due to having "died from the heat". Im not sure how this has happened but it explains the dangerous terrain message spam I kept getting (which i thought was caused by the magma). Construction has been halted until I find a solution. The layout is a 3 tile wide tunnel (5 tiles long) with a roof that leads to an 11x11 square tower with a staitcase at its centre. Dwarves keep dying in the tunnel, why is this happening?
