I'm actually pretty curious about this too.  I don't expect a full secrets-divulging response, but what sorts of changes, exactly, need to be done to the military structure that makes the save games incompatible?

I will admit to being a teensy bit sad over not being able to take current saves, or find a way to convert old saves, and use them with a hopefully better-optimized version.  Maybe if that OpenGL tweak finds it's way into a windows binary...

I guess the military structure would require a... military structure. Currently there isn't much apart from squads and squad leaders at the fort. The army arc is way, way beyond that. Considering the sketched up plans it's not surprising it requires a backward comaptibility break. I would have been surprised if it didn't.

Wait, does this mean that I can't lose my only pick because it got stuck in a cougar that left the map? If yes, why did this get changed? I kinda liked it, as it provided unforeseen challenges.

From memory, it was causing game crashes for some people.

It sounds to me, due to the word "shared", as though it refers to stuckins that the wielder of the weapon hasn't yet let go of, not stuckins of weapons that have been let go of.

"Sure, as soon as I'm off your land the sword becomes mine and you HAVE to let go"  =->  Just a funny senerio in my mind.

Keep in mind there won't be another version for another few weeks or so. Even then, I don't expect much more than bugfixes and small edits to small things that depend on breaking the save.

Once some features get in, I'm updating.

I wonder how many players port saves, and how many (like me) generate multiple worlds per version and never port anything.

My forts usually don't live long enough to get ported.

Hello!

I wonder how many players port saves, and how many (like me) generate multiple worlds per version and never port anything.

Personally, I never port since I always hope to be able to file a bug report and make myself useful (I believe that reporting bugs is the one main way how the financially weak can support Toady and DF. It may be very little, but it is at least something even I can return). And risking porting bugs kind of limits the usefulness of bug reports in my opinion.

However, I am still not sure about whether to port my current fortress or not because it has moved quite a bit towards reaching its goal. But then again, I made quite a number of nasty mistakes in the beginning (low immigration at first made me irresponsible as far as defenses were concerned), so starting anew may be a good option.

I think I will stay true to my motto: "New version - new worlds".

How long till Core28?

You mean 29. :P

Alright, seriously, Deathworks, I was fine with the

"Hi,

...

"Deathworks"

thing, but for some reason the bolding is the last straw. No idea why.

Ah well, concurrent versions will have to do, I s'pose.

Step 1: Backup your saves.
Step 2: Load your fortress.
Step 3: Abandon your fortress.
Step 4: Reclaim it to get the location on the map and the area of influence.
Step 5: Do this.
Step 6: Regen your perfect location in the new version.
Step 7: ? ? ?
Step 8: Profit!

I can't wait to see what the next release will have. How long has it been since a save-breaking release, anyway? I know Toady does his best to maintain save compatibility, but I'm amazed he was able to do it with the first Army Arc release.

Toady and DF
Honor, respect, etc.. Or something like that.  ::)
