What do the names on the world map signify in the bottom left corner and what do the different symbols by the compass mean?  thanks.

The names are the names of the continent you're standing on and the name of the world you're standing on.

The symbols in the compass, according to the wiki:

EDIT: Stupid formatting errors changed all my symbols to annoying wall of text. Just click the link above, that should be most of them.
