Usable vehicles.
« on: September 06, 2008, 02:51:13 pm »

There's wagons in dorf mode, but they're AI-only, and I would like to see my dorfs and adventurer be able to commandeer vehicles.

Wagons, bicycles, any sort of vehicle would be good.

Hell, maybe it could be modded so that dorfs can build mecha... Dorfen Lagann, anyone? ;D

What purpose would these vehicles server?  You mention bikes.  Does it really take that long to scale the mountain?  Wagons can't use stairs so it's not like you could just bring them down into your fort and fill them with 10,000 stone before coming back up.  This should be done well after more important things that influence gameplay are done.

As for Wagons... they would be excellent to keep supplies in for your own Trade Carivans, Seige parties, and perhaps for supplies of other towns you own.

I personally do believe Wagons (or something similar) will be player controlled eventually.

Outside that... Mounts and Minecarts I also believe will be possible later.

There are ramps for a reason.

Minecarts that have to follow a track would be cool. Especially if you can go all roller coaster while building it.   :D

Wheelchairs. Seriously.  Would allow injured dwarves to move slowly around on whatever z-levels you happen to have ramp access to.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Yes, and then you build a 10-ramp long downward slope and send your legless swordsdwarf down it into a goblin party at a tremendous speed. Reminds me of Pratchett's Silver Horde.

This is why I want mine carts for mining.

To RIDE in Adventure mode!

And mine cart traps where you run over goblins or dump them in the mine cart and send them flying off a cliff/into lava.  :D

Would make an awesome way to start a 'hermit' fort from a successful 200~ dwarf fort. You choose 1 dwarf, probably the newest immigrant who has no friends yet and separate him from the rest of the dwarves. Then you set up something to kill everyone in the fortress, like a connected series of collapses and monster releases or magma flooding (from an upper z-level, preferably with some sort of drainage so it just destroys the items but leaves the chambers) and build a get-away minecart line which leads to a safe spot outside (or even a safe chamber inside) the fortress. Stick the chosen survivor in the mine cart, set him rolling and then activate the collapses/magma and watch the fortress crumble around him as he zooms off to safety.

Would be an awesome ride!  :D And would inject challenge into the game, having to scrape off a living from whatever is left of the fortress and avoid whatever horrors you've uncaged.
