control troubles with movement
« on: September 06, 2008, 12:05:28 pm »

Hi  I've noticed in dwarf fotress alot of hte times when i hit an arrow key  my dwarf will move two spaces instead of one.  Only seems to happen in adventure mode.   I was wondering if anyone else experienced this?  is there a way to fix it?

It could be quite useful actually, I think it means your dwarf is very fast, look at the bottom of the screen at the 'Speed' indicator, what number is it?

And have you modded any data/raw files?

It's most likely just a bit of lag between the game and the keyboard.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

This has nothing to do with speed.  This is just a problem with the game recognizing more keystrokes than are actually coming in.  What happens is that the key is being held down long enough that it sends more than one signal.  It takes the game a long enough time to compute movement that both movements will be taken in one fell swoop.

Go into your init.txt file and find [KEY_HOLD_MS:150], and set the number slightly higher.

For some reason I was getting this lag like crazy when I had the priority set to "HIGH" but it worked much better after I set it back down to "NORMAL."

When this happens to me it's because the game stutters and keystrokes get queued up and executed in rapid succession.

Generally this means I effectively can't hold down the key to move about in adventure mode, as the game will skip and I will find myself spread thin like jam over the landscape by a pair of lions.
