Iji: Philosophy, and the triumph of bad dialogue.
« on: September 06, 2008, 11:07:26 am »

So I've been playing this game non-stop for the past three days, it's really fun, thought I'd share.
http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php
It's called Iji, it has a look inspired heavily by some old style games such as Flashback and Another World.
The controls might feel a little stiff but trust me, the game is very addictive. The story is great although the writing could use a little work and the game is very highly polished....

So go play it already...

Hmmm, it's coming up to 7AM.  What else was it I wanted to do tonight?  Oh yeah.  Sleep.

Very good game.  I greatly appreciate that stealth and pacifism are not only possible but meaningfully affect the game.  The storyline is solid if pessimistic, and actually had me feeling a bit queasy (in a good, player-immersion-i-has-it type way) at some points.

Good fun.  Thanks for recommending it.  I am now losing my ability to type at even my usual level of coherency, so I'm going to sleep now.

Now that I'm slightly more awake... other things I liked:

-I played a pacifist game.  This meant that often, when I did kill something, Iji would say a tearful 'sorry...'.

-Four difficulty settings.  I played on the lowest and did not have an easy time of it.  I suspect more of the game and plot open up on the harder ones.

-Hidden fun stuff.

- When killed by a boss, your character gives you hints on how to fight them.

Being a pacifist is hard when people keep on shooting you.

Heh, I'm playing a more agressive style (hacker + weapons specialist) and somethimes landing a killing blow causes Iji to scream DIE! at her opponents. Also, the hihg-level weapons get prety badass, especialy the combined versions.

I'm also having fun reading through many of the databanks haning around everywhere.

Have you combined a komoto lightning gun with a tasen fusion cannon? The result is an ammo eating apocalypse.

Anyway, if anyone finds the retribution skill tell me, I've searched high and low and have not found it.

Also I believe there is no difference between storyline in higher and lower difficulties, just the rewards you get for completing them. You do however get more story for certain things, reading logbooks opens up story for example, there's Mia's ribbons which you have to collect as you go along. Then there's things like the posters and the hidden surprise at the end of sector Z. It's kind of a pity you don't find out if the tasen girlfriend & company actually manages to escape, I think it's assumed they do but you never find out how it goes for them.

I have it!  No idea where it's from.  Would you like me to post how it's done?

I think so. Isn't that the huge blast that knocks you back? It's nice, but I actually prefer the laser you get when combining a splinter with a fusion gun. Or the splinter machine gun. Or the triple rocket launcher. Or the upgraded plasma gun that knocks your opponent down. Gosh, there are to many great weapons to use all at once...

Yeesh I actually wound up doing everything on this game, I got retribution, it's kinda tricky to activate, oh and try defeating the final boss with the super secret banana gun.

No it's the big beam that shoots through walls.

As for the girlfriend...

The end is a big 'fuck you' to Iji.

It is very pessimistic, but it is better if Dan survives though.

I love this game! The combined shotgun and number 5 weapon (forgot its name) is great, but I just love killing people with their own weapons.
