Advanced Children Behavior?
« on: September 06, 2008, 02:28:34 am »

Child behavior depth increase:
Adding in bad behavior for unattended children (due to lack of a nursery, or school using chairs, tables, and a teacher) causing deconstruction of minor objects (no walls, supports, and such, things like an armor stand/weapon rack, tables/chairs, nothing large like floodgates or doors), minor tantrums (black eyes or bullying other kids as a mood modifier adding to bully but taking away from the victim), and discipline enforced by either parents or a teacher (ranging from lectures, to spankings....hopefully not administered by the hammerer). Bad children should also steal food/booze sometimes as a snack, wander around, mess with small animals like cats and dogs, or mess with levers/open cages/open chains just to annoy people for attention.

Good children would be more helpful around the fortress when not attending classes, such as hauling small objects, or performing some tasks they already do, like harvesting plants, or tasks of someone they like enough (such as a parent or a close friend) sometimes, and help tend to wounded dwarfs or prisoners by bringing food and water.

I had plenty more, but i figured i should quit while i start spewing complete nonsense.

Let's not forget dwarven serial killers killing small animals in childhood because of repressed anger. Or abuse.

Oh wait, that's normal for a dwarf. xD

Bad behavior due to lack of nursery?

Bad idea.
In this case most, if not all dwarven children will behave very badly ;D

I just don't see dwarven children behaving as badly as human children. More likely, they'd be emulating their parents are trying to be industrious in some fashion. At least a good portion of the time. After all, dwarves are inherently satisfied by having work to do.

So I could see them taking designated 'training' supplies and spending time in workshops learning how to do stuff. Once they're a little older, becoming apprentices to various craftsdwarves and being steered towards a useful profession, where they'd be at novice in that skill when they reach adulthood. We can assume that most tasks given them will produce non-modified products at best, and usually just result in junk that just gets tossed. Maybe crude quality items, when Toady gets that implemented?

I also think that children should do small hauling tasks, since even human children are given those tasks all the time. "Urist, take the garbage out!"

Not to say all dwarven children will behave well. But I think that kind of behavior should go in when Toady figures out how crime is going to be handled in the game, since it'll be a varient on that. And the reasons for crimes should be similar.
Not being given enough time to play (which should be implemented as an activity, I think) would of course lead to negative thoughts, which might trigger bad behavior.

I'd like to see them throw harmless snowballs and mudballs at each other if there's snow or mud around.

A school, sure. An academy too.

Assign those legendery dwarves to teach in those classes and idle dwarves could go to a class and learn. Once dwarven economy kicks in classes start to cost money.

But yeah... I'd hate for the "Attend party" problem to happen with schools.

This could go hand in hand with my timeframe suggestion.

You know... Being able to tell them what to do each day of the week and if they should stop to eat at that particular day or not. Being able to set a template for each profession would rock too.

I'm all for child workers. Then mats, rugs, clothes and other stuff made by children could be sold in stores. When the economy plays a bigger part workshops using child labour would be more economic because you can fit more children into the workshops, they eat less and require less pay.

You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

Joke Aside... Children did work during these times and earlier. The system that needs to be added is the Apprentise system for children

well... it all depends.  Dwarf are considered an adult at 12, right?

For apprentices, I'd think they'd be 'Youths' from 8 till 16, and thats when they could be apprentices.  All that would do is split the difference though.  You'd get half-assed workers for twice as long.  QED current system HAS apprentiships it's just abstracted out.

Well it sort of does. Biggest difference being that any dwarf can pick up any skill, regardless of whether or not there is a more skilled dwarf around to teach them. In reality, trying to teach yourself weaponsmithing without a master to train you would be tough. It'd take forever for you to even produce a basic quality sword without badly injuring yourself or ruining the materials.

So I'm still in favor of a Master/Apprentice system. I'm ok with Dwarves being able to figure stuff out if they have to, but it should take a lot longer to get past Novice if you don't have someone teaching you what to do.

Way, WAY off-topic, but if dwarves are adult at 12, what's their age of consent? O.o;
