Also, one of the last things I have to say is as follows

Hunger and Thirst in Dwarf Fortress isn't the passive hunger or thirst you experience in day to day life, but rather CRAVING FOOD!!! (Hense why you can eat Mud and drink blood if your thirsty sometimes)

Starving and Dehydration in Dwarf Fortress is dying... Not "You skipped lunch"

The situation would not be nearly so bad if the leader wasn't so important. Following their leader into his room to watch him sleep can take out alot of dwarves. I try not to have more than 5 dwarves in a squad for this reason. I really don't like having to reorganize my squads to find a leader who's not sleeping.

If military dwarves can do their utmost when called upon to do so, then we can throw in some trap disabling goblins, bigger sieges, and more fun in general.

Starving and Dehydration in Dwarf Fortress is dying... Not "You skipped lunch"

Unfortunately, DF has five levels (visible) to the user:

"Fine" i.e. "I ate recently"
"Hungry" i.e. "Is it lunch time?"
"Very hungry?" i.e. "I didn't have breakfast or lunch, and when's dinner?"
"STARVING" i.e. "I can't remember the last time I ate, would you please FEED ME?!?"
"Hunting for vermin" i.e. "hunting for vermin to satiate a hungry belly."

Interestingly at "Hungry" you are able to eat mud and at "Thirsty" you can drink blood in Adventure mode.

Hense why I believe that "Hungry" and "Thirsty" isn't as subtle as they appear.

Oddly though Vermine are the Dohnuts of Dwarvern Society... They will just snatch any you capture up... However they have to be uttarly starving to hunt for one themselves... How does that work?

Then again... I guess it could be related to bugs... Yes most of the world eats bugs... However you would have to go downright crazy to suddenly dig non-stop through the mud to eat them.

Agree. If the squads weren't tied completely to the leader then this really wouldn't be an issue. Right now if the leader goes on break, you can have a huge chunk of your military wandering off even in the middle of a battle. If the leader needs to eat/drink/snooze, the next most skilled dwarf should take over command of the squad.

To admit though I can sympathise...

Six floors down into my fortress I had dug into a Chasm and needed my military to patrol there incase the Batmen attacked my miners (they did... twice!)

UNFORTUNATELY they took forever to get to that spot... and even then they often left RIGHT BEFORE making it there.

I had to make a second eatery and I had to set many military units to patrol there just to get the arms and legs of the Dwarves who lost their lives.

Oversight?  The Hammerer eats other dwarves if he can't hammer them.
