[39-40a]2 Dwarf Mode fire issues
« on: September 05, 2008, 02:13:51 pm »

When a fire imp lights grass on fire, either by dying or throwing a fireball, two problems occur.

1) Only the grass burns, not any shrubs, sapplings, or trees, or other plant life.  Clothing, logs, and other dwarfy type burnables seem to ignite just fine.
2) The fire doesn't spread via natural, grass covered ramps to other z levels.

This problem is true for 40c as well, judging by the absurdly large forest fire that didn't actually burn any trees.

This isn't really a bug, more of a feature that Toady hasn't gotten around to putting in the game yet.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I have noticed that the fire can spread upwards to higher Z levels, but not downwards.  However, I have only noticed this on the one blazing inferno map.  Can anyone confirm?

Set temperature variance really high with a super extreme top end.

Embark on a "melting" and a non "melting" map and see what happens.

(Hopefully you'll get the one biome to explode violently and then through normal burn mechanics set the rest of the site on fire).

;P

I remember seeing the trees not burning the last fire I was looking at -- I'm not sure what's up.  The grass used to set trees on fire just fine.  The fire speeds and so on constantly change though, and it could be that it doesn't have time to raise the temperature of the tree tiles to the ignition point before it's burned out now.

Of course, this'll have to be set up such that trees don't always catch on fire, since they don't in RL...

Yeah, it would be neat if the only time multiple trees catch on fire is in a dense forest - perhaps sparsely treed forests allow for more cooldown or something.

Fire didn't go up ramps in my game.  I kind of like how it burns now, trees and harvestables are nice to have ;p  But it would be cool for more random fire that sometimes lights adjacent squares and sometimes doesn't.
