Of course. Fortress just seems wrong when one person is in it.

Think of it like the house of the most famous, and most paranoid, person in the world.

Or you could just build a fortress in fort mode and abandon it and claim it as your own and rule the kingdom of one.

You could invite people from nearby towns in for dinner!
You kill them after of course, that's kind of the point.

How come I'm thinking of dwarves playing russian roulette with a crossbow now?

Holy schist, this thread is mica me sick.
DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Hmmm I just abandoned a fortress I built and jumped into adventure mode to explore it only to bump into my band of fortress dwarves, nicknames and all heading west in seach of new territory.

Will they actually go and live in another town and have full lives till they horribly die or are they doomed to wander the wasteland?

I think they settle in a town, but they pretty much just mill around, I don't think they become full members or something like that.

Oh and if that happens again, try to recruit the military.  I actually managed to recruit a couple champions from old fortresses with starting proficient swordsmen.  Seems to be some kind of bonus to their odds of agreeing to come with you.

Is that what happens when you abandon the fort? I just thought they all ate each other and then suicide them selves.

Bah. I'm going to dig my way to the core and all the eldritch horrors that lie within! And my naked wrestler will pinch them into submission! Or die. Or be inflicted with a pain worse than death. Those last two seem more likely, but if experience has taught me anything its that if you throw enough coins, sand, vomit, or corpses at enemies they will eventually succumb. Eventually.

And then comes the part with guilds, where you can hire people to join your group in Adventure mode... which then nulls the point of Dwarf Fortress Mode.

Amirite? Adventure mode + Hiring people + Telling them what to do = Personal Fortress mode. xD

Apparently, retiring in a town gets rid of those rescued children when you resume adventuring.

...

Cool.

Eventually, of course, fortress mode is started by buying supplies in adventure mode, walking around til you find a nice spot, and embarking, I think is the way it is planned.

Yeah, the Toady told us that the final destination is to totally merge both modes. But we go offtopic too far.
