Why won't you dump this stone!
« on: September 04, 2008, 05:13:25 am »

It appears that in random places, a few stones (7 so far i've spotted) in my fort won't register as usable (by workshops or for building things), and cannot be dumped (they can be designated, but won't ever get picked up, i had 50 dwarfs idling with refuse handling, and a dumping zone designated).

In a few places, they just will not register those stones as existing for use (can't build a floor on same spot with them) or hauling/dumping, but will acknowledge they are in the way of building workshops/depots on top of them....not sure if this has been mentioned before....

I've modded in a new race (non-playable), and a new work pet (combat spiders), but haven't had this happen in other forts since i've done the modding, so i haven't a clue what could be causing it (the only difference with this fort to the others i've made, is it's reclaimed, and next to a chasm).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The version i'm using is 40c

It's not as simple as those stones already being earmarked for some other (possibly suspended, maybe just long-standing and yet still unfulfilled) construction project of some kind, is it?

Ensure all your resource pre-assigning stone-using jobs (workshops, et al, pick and choose at job-activating time, unless I'm very much mistaken) are not causing the problem.  Cancelling any that are suspended and reapplying them is one thing I occasionally do when peculiar things happen (beware of getting two or more jobs mutually blocking each other by needing the material lying on the build square of another of the construction sites, suspending that job when attempted, etc, etc...  I've had fun with something like that happening, in the past. :D)  Also it can help re-optimise the material paths, if done wisely after closer material supplies have been generated (or partially moved from A to B, but abandoned in a place fairly handy for C, while A and B are now joined by a new cross-tunnel allowing quicker resupply for brand new material...  Again, much fun.)

I don't think marking stone for Dumping creates the same sort of "lost or misplaced" message for the earmarking construction or other use as it would if it was undermined by channelling or similar in-between assignment and a representative of Dwarfkind grabbing hold of the designated item, BICBW.

Do you get "dump site inaccessible" spam?  I (am pretty sure) I've had problems with an outdoor dump spot, where the dwarves seemed to:

1. Decide to dump a stone
2. Pick a dump site
3. Realize that particular dump site was outdoors (dwarves set to remain indoors)
4. Give up with a "dump site inaccessible" message
5. Repeat

I've got all cancellations on, and it shows nothing being reported regarding the dumping of the stones, and i have nothing being constructed literally on the entire map, and they still ignore said stones. The moment i mined them out, i tried to build a workshop or a depot on said spots, and thats when i realized they wouldn't even bother moving them over.

It's not game breaking or anything, but it does get mildly annoying having small spots i have to work around.

are the stones above ground (outside)?
the standart O ption for warfes is to ignore refuse from outside.
just a guess, if my refuse isnt dumped or my corpses dont get burried, its usualy this reason.

the said stones are both outside and inside

I also have this problem.

Usually the dwarves move stone out of the way of buildings themselves, but they refuse to for whatever reason this time. I set up a dumping zone, then set the stones to be dumped, and despite having 12 idlers, no one is dumping shit.

^^^
1. Make sure stones aren't forbidden
2. Check the jobs list to make absolutely sure there aren't any suspended jobs using those stones

dumping might be classified as a refuse-type objective,
