[40c] Revisiting non-micro vermin swarming, this time with proof!
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:58:44 pm »

Ok, it isn't 'many fluffy wamblers' this time, it's a swarm of bats. I used to think this was intentional so i thought nothing of it, i've seen 'many rats' and 'many large roaches' in addition to 'many fluffy wamblers' and 'a swarm of bats'.

This has occurred over several versions. This had been previously 'reported' offhand and Toady said it was a bug so once it happened again i gathered evidence.

Screencap or it didn't happen:

And heres the save off of DFFD:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=517

Theres a swarm of bats to the south of the cave entrance as shown in the screenshot.

Batman has his cave in the middle of a frozen wasteland?

 No, thats Supermans lair.

Double post for another screenie, this time of the original reported creatures: 'many fluffy wamblers':

As i've stated before, i see groups of vermin like this all over the place. Never thought it was unintentional though.

Is this a bug? I had a flock of bats, about fifty strong fly into my fortress once, I thought it was an event or something. It did wipe the fort out though, too many dead vermin, too many live vermin, too much miasma, crazed dwarves everywhere, plus the flapping vermin all kamikazee'd my doors and jammed them open in time for a siege.

If we compare it with reality where you also have bats in large swarms I would call it rather a feature than a bug

No. This is one block of 'many' vermin, not a large swarm of individuals. Thats an event like in adventure mode when 'a large swarm of bats has been disturbed'. (The similar wording doesn't make it the same thing, read below)

If we compare it with reality where you also have bats in large swarms I would call it rather a feature than a bug

If you read my comments in the OP you'd see that i thought it was a feature until Toady told me it was a bug too. This swarm acts as a single creature. It only leaves 1 corpse, i haven't managed to trap a swarm yet though, so i can't tell you about that.

Bump since Toady was the one to identify this behavior as a bug, and he'd want to know about it.

You've never embarked on a [GOOD] location? Scared of the Horned Menace?

They're basically [GOOD] white fluffy rats. They are physically impossible to hate, and taste great with mustard.  ;)

Does that save commonly create these groups?  One after the fact isn't going to help unfortunately, and I've scoured the code already for anything that would produce a vermin event with a number greater than one on a non-micro vermin and come up empty.  I think the last thing left to me is to check the events as they are created and catch it in the act.

Recently I got packs of "many weasels." Unfortunately these groups fell on one of my dwarves who hates weasels, driving him insane in a short period of time. Shortly after this the file was corrupted for some reason or another, else I would give it to you.

Well, i've observed it in various maps so i can't really say when one commonly makes swarms of non-micro vermin. Happens all the time.

Sorry i can't be more help.
