Daggers

I am not sure if someone else thought of this idea before me but would it not be cool if your normal dwarf can walk around with daggers as a self defense weapon and attack weak enemies and animals instead of running away from kobolds and deer? and what if there is a siege and you have no time for a dwarf to get his armour and weapon and fight the goblins that appeared 2 squares next to him? (that happens to me alot)

Who else thinks this is a good idea?

They should also be used as a backup weapon for marksdwarves and stuff.

Do you want daggers or knives as side arms?  A dagger is meant for stabbing as it has a point, and a knives are for cutting for they have an edge.  A knife is more practical for both combat and civilian tasks, where as a dagger is more for assassinations.

Does everyone understand the difference now?

Being able to assign weapons to all dwarfs, not just in the military (or whose jobs need it - I always give "woodcutting" to all my outside-dwarfs) would be nice, and giving civilians armour (at the cost of negative thoughts)
I think it's already been suggested (it may even be a bloat/core/req).

Woodcutting doesn't really help.  Dwarves who have woodcutting can't uses axes very well (even if they're legendary woodcutters).

But being useless with an axe is better than being useless at wrestling, I think.

I'd certainly prefer if marksdwarves carried a short blade for close combat instead of meleeing with a damn crossbow

Those 'damn crossbows' aren't really much worse than hammers right now. A bit less damage, but it's enough to kill things fine - and you can use a shield with the crossbow in unmodified DF (they are set to 1 handed).

I like training my fortress at large in wrestling and axe use, then making them all woodcutters. That way they can kick ass with their masterwork steel axe whenever trouble comes. The only exception are my miners, they have legendary mining skill with the masterwork steel picks :)

Alternatively, let all professions carry a relevant tool. Hammers for the smiths and the masons, axes for the butchers, etc.

In my oppinion the suggestion on its own is pointless and harmful.

In order to make it work Id think there would have to be

1) Fleshed out Economy that includes the ability for dwarves to create things outside of you telling them to (Which I hope happens some day... Especially since it could mean I won't have to make TONS of clothing)

2) Theivery and true crime which Toady said may or may not happen in Fortress mode (If I remember correctly)

3) Workshop tools and upgrades (which will happen eventually)

Did anyone else think of "The Butcher" from Diablo when reading this?

Well compared that the Butcher has an Axe and not a Knife... No
