Sunglasses could lessen the effects of cave adaptation.

I just got an awesome mental image of a bunch of dwarves stopping at the fortress entrance to whip out sunglasses before kicking goblin butt outside.

There's already a bloat for seeing glasses, so I don't see why not - unless we'd need a new glass-type. How do you make tinted glass? (would green glass do?)
Would all dwarves carry them, and they'd only take effect when they're outside? Otherwise, I could see a lot of jobs interrupted by "Going to get glasses", and then who knows if they'd remember to complete the task.

This is, "The Heaven Piercing Spiral", a Pair of Orange Glass Sunglasses.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It menaces with spikes of Orange Glass.  On it is an image of Spirals in Orange Glass.  On it is an image of a Human Skull Totem wearing "The Heaven Piercing Spiral", a Pair of Orange Glass Sunglasses in Orange Glass.  The Human Skull Totem is burning.  This image relates to the ascension of Simon Drillspirals to the leadership of Crimsonfaced in 1279.

Well I can see that glasses can be added in as [LAYER:UNDER] for the head.  For now I think eye-glasses of all kinds, including monocles can be modded in as clothing made out of glass (if that's possible) with no special effect.  And the dwarves can wear them all the time as long as they're not wearing masks or face veils

According to Wikipedia, Cairngorm (smoky quartz) panes were used to make a precursor to sunglasses in 12th Century China that were effective in keeping the glare out of the eyes.  So yes, Dwarven shades made out of smoky quartz is entirely feasible for the game.

I think cave adaption has to do with a lot more than just sight.  That having been said:

Agreed, I also think it might have something to do with the fact of no longer having a ceiling over them. Think of it, some people get very nauseous from looking down long drops because their brain is used to having a floor beneath them. With dwarves it would be the opposite, they are used to always having a ceiling above them, and then when they walk outside their brain freaks out because it is just empty above them with no ceiling.

I am reminded of my Matrix Dwarf parody I posted quite a while back involving Bomrekus, Urio and Cerolity. Let's not forget the goblin and GCS agents.

Why? All he needs is a crossbow and 500 bolts.
Actually, make that 5000, or he'll run out after a few seconds.

"The other gods! The other gods! The gods of the outer hells that guard the feeble gods of earth!... Look away... Go back... Do not see! Do not see! The vengeance of the infinite abysses... That cursed, that damnable pit... Merciful gods of earth, I am falling into the sky!"

True, true.  But reckon that light as well as agoraphobia must play a role, it's not clear how much each is.

He did specify that they would lessen the effects of cave adaptation.
Wouldn't it be neat if kings and such arrived in a sedan chair with opaque windows?

This would make more sense if not for the fact that cave adaption doesn't happen if you have a light/indoors room. There's a ceiling in that case, but then there's also light, which prevents the adaption.

I don't really think sunglasses fit the DF historical model.

Actually, I was about to say that eyeglasses (as in corrective lenses) are pushing it for DF, but apparently they were invented around the 12th-13th century (unless you count possible Muslim world inventions dating back to, say, the 9th, but those guys were kind of awesome like that and DF is more European).

Granted, they probably weren't very good and could only correct for certain kinds of vision problems.

Apparently, tinted lenses for use as something like sunglasses are a relatively recent invention, although I'm not sure why that is the case. However, if there's a good reason for it, I don't see them as being a great idea in DF, and I agree that cave adaptation is about a lot more than simple light levels anyway (I'm not really considering light/indoor rooms very much since the systems for that stuff are hardly fleshed out at all right now).
