Gratuitous Cheating
« on: August 31, 2008, 11:43:20 pm »

Does anyone know a relatively fast way to build a fortress where the items inside won't be scattered across the entire freaking map?  I don't care if everything's a mess inside, I just want it to stay inside.

I made this little mini-fortress with a full suit of adamantine armor and an adamantine short sword, along with a bunch of coins and crafts, and some gems.  Only the gems were still there when I visited immediately after abandoning the fortress.  >.<

Do you mean that if I dump the stuff in a Trade Depot, it'll stay put?

Put light stuff in a bin with lots of heavy stuff. It takes a bit of tweaking, but it usually works. It works better if the bin itself is made of lead or somesuch.

OK, thanks for the tip.

One other thing - do doors linked to levers (and other such combinations) actually help keep things in one place?

Ok.

One final thing - what actually causes the items to scatter around?  Is it random with variables, or is it based on creatures screwing with the items in question?

i think its random variables since creatures dont do anything untill you get to their map.

because all the adamantine and weapons would have been taken by kobolds and somesuch. booze drunk by dark gnomes. food is sometimes even left behind, if you're quick and well timed.

Would the adamantine stuff be looted by the humans nearby, too?  I *did* drop the fortress in a human town to make it easier to find.

Also, does it actually have items vanish?  Do they just disappear, or are they relocated to another place?

Oh, on an interesting side note - I had set a meeting area to make my dwarves stay where I wanted while I made the armor and such.  As an adventurer, I reached the town and found that every last person in town is jammed into that zone.  This, of course, makes it rather hard to speak to shopkeepers (though I haven't actually figured out how to determine an item's value, so I haven't tried buying anything yet).

Items dont disapear as far as I know, well accept food, but its more like rotting than being stolen. Like I said earlier, put every thing you want to find later ina  trade depo. It dosn't move at all.

I've tried the depot way, never found the items. Do you do it a specific way? Like requesting the items to be traded there, and then abandoning? I'm thinking I abandoned before they hauled it, or they never moved them in because there weren't any traders? What about artifacts?

the only way i could think of to keep artifacts is to kill the dwarf thats holding them then haul em to the trade depot.
