I liked Morrowind allot for it's fantastic atmosphere.  Daggerfall was awesome in a DF "Why can't I do this in every other game?" sort of way.  Arena... well it had a huge world... It doesn't hold up that well today though.  Oblivion on the other hand was a total disappointment, and that's putting it lightly.  So for me at least, it's really quite frustrating, because Bethesda have made good games in the past (and I haven't named all of them) but the current incarnation of the company seems steadfastly dedicated to being as big an example of everything wrong with the video game industry as possible.

why was oblivion a huge disappiontment?

dont even say that the NPCs were messed up because i know morrowind's werent any better.

the only thing i didnt like about oblivion was that, it became so laggy that sometimes i couldnt get up in those oblivion elevators, and that the enchanting system was so weak.

Yes, especially the contents of shelves and tables flying everywhere as you walk by (fixed for the most part in FO3, though).

hmmmm, ive never had that problem. the worst is that when i pick something up everything shifts a bit. but thats it

dont forge tthe replayablitly, the elder scrolls series are the only ones ive ever played twice

The Gamebryo engine was a major reason for the disappointment. I wont go in the old discussion about the lack of a proper FPS cap, and most people dont -for instance- not even properly notice the microstuttering you can get even at 60 fps. All in all, it's a major pita, and not worth the hassle.

And yes, the npcs were THAT bad. in morrowind at least they had more than 2 voices.

And we could go on for hours on end how bad the quicktravelling and questcompass can screw up the whole game.

sure, you can mod the hell out of it, but vanilla oblivion was a fifty buck insult with a lot of eyecandy.

The physics
Iirc there werent even that many physics effects in oblivion; most stuff was scripted bullshit. I cant remember the details, but a friend of mine (who bought the game) pointed out the physics effects and how much he liked them, and in most cases I could prove that it didnt really work properly. Major example is that friggin bucket over the well in the tut - just shoot arrows from different sides, it doesnt calculate the weight of the arrows at all. Or the friggin logtraps. Bad bad bad....

(dont get me wrong, I dont think oblivion is just "bad" - its a very decent game, no questiosn asked. but it certainly doesnt live up to the hype)

In case of Oblivion, there is none unless you install a slew of mods. You can do everything with one character and nearly everything can only happen in one way. Why would you start over?

i was most let down because they didnt have anything that felt like a living "city".  i understand that the graphics are more costly in modern games, but the capital of the empire didnt hold a candle to the size and scale of cities seen in Arena and Daggerfall.

it felt like a resort town or something, surrounded by its little vineyards and with its quaint little novelty shops.  where was the teaming metropolis, hub of trade and government for an empire that is contenental in scale?  where were the caravansaries and merchants, the vast farms bringing their goods to market to support the urban population?

it just didnt feel alive to me.  also, you couldnt buy cryodylic brandy ANYWHERE in the capital city of cryodyl.  WTF was up with THAT?

for all the eye candy, i just didnt feel immersed.

There are so many reasons it's pretty much impossible to list them all.  Seriously.  I've tried before and I always miss some...  Let me see what I remember this time.

Radiant AI was an outright lie.

The game being set in Cyrodiil was an outright lie. (it was set in generic medieval fantasy land instead)

The "Better dialogue" was an outright lie.  It was just more voice acted, but there was less of it, and it was just as linear and possibly more badly written. (unless you count anything with voice acting as inherently better than anything without it, in which case what are you doing on this forum?)

The plot was horribly derivative save the world bullshit except you're not even the chosen one, instead you're the guy who does all the chosen one's work for him while he sits around "studying" so it ends up being pretty much the same anyway... what?

The Blades are now no longer secret agents, but the Praetorian Guard, minus the disloyalty...

The biggest bit of early hype was that they had Patrick Steward on the cast and then they give him hardly any lines before they kill him off halfway through the pain in the ass mandatory tutorial.

Massive pointless wilderness with nothing worth exploring for, featuring Soil Erosion!.

Massive pointless wilderness with nothing worth exploring for, and absolutely nonsensical dungeon placement.  "Hey look another destroyed guard tower that looks just like the last destroyed guard tower.  Funny how there isn't a single non destroyed one.  I wonder what's up with that... It sure as hell doesn't have a single thing to do with the Daedric invasion."

Violence is the only answer.  Or at least, 8 out of 10 times there is only one answer ever and 10 out of ten of those 8 times it's violence.

The enemies are all suicidal.

"We're a bunch of women who specialize in seducing married men, getting them to undress, and then robbing them in their helpless state.  Well hello there heavily armed stranger that doesn't look married, why don't you come to our house?  What you won't take off your clothes and you want this useless ring?  You must have been hired by the guards specifically for the purpose of catching us!!  Rawrg!  Kill!!!"

They actually removed non-violent solutions that they had originally intended to put in the game, the above quest is a perfect example.

Craptacular distance textures.

About 14 voice actors in the whole entire game, including the 3 who didn't play multiple characters and Shivering Isles.

Built in step my step walkthrough that you can't turn off.  "I sense that I am near the alter."  "I am near the alter, I should drop the scamp staff" "I have dropped the scamp staff, I should return to so and so and tell her about it."  (It's so bad that for the one quest where it for some reason isn't there I actually had allot of trouble until I managed to turn my brain back on.

Oblivion Gates.

Level Scaling...

Withholding content to sell later as DLC.  (This is the imperial Orery, the door is locked.  To unlock the door, just pay us ten bucks.)

Speaking of Manimarco, "Hi, I'm the leader of the mage's guild.  Who's inexplicably banned necromancy and made an entire group of my members hunted outlaws  Now their leader is coming to free them from oppression, since I'm a total retard I'm going to kill myself now, and trap my soul in this soulstone which I won't even explain to you.  By the way, you're the leader now even though you don't know any magic!  You get a chest that makes free potion components and a useless traveling companion!

Etc... etc... etc....

Get Half Life 2.  It's a much more fulfilling game experience, and it has a better physics engine.

Already got the Orange Box. Maybe I'll just pick up Garry's Mod.

Get Saint's Row 2!  It also lets you play dress up, and the clothes are allot cooler.  It's also got guns, and cars, and you can pimp your cars, or prostitutes and it's got helecopters.  There's even multiplayer.

you heard it has radiant AI, you heard it had voice acting, thats all hype.

quick traveling is pretty much neccisary, why would ANYONE want to spend the entire game walking the entire way. and you dont have to use it or the quest finders if you dont want to....they give you the option so dont complain just because its there for people to use.

the voice acting i dont have a problem with, i dont tend to pay attention to fequencies and tone and pitch in an AIs voice, the story gets to me either way, but yeh having a lady switch accents and having someone talk to someone with the same voice is annoying.
