I've kinda assumed that all the settlements in FO3 were bigger than they look. Lol, certainly all the cities settlements in FO3 can't just have 20 people at most? Fallout 2 was much bigger in that sense
While this is not wrong, I challenge anyone who gets hung up on the small size of Fallout 3's towns to open up the editor and try making an appropriately sized town. With all the proper detail. With NPCs worth talking to. Then get a bunch of voice actors to supply that.
In the old Fallouts, the towns could be made in a couple hours by just placing some isometric walls, and maybe 5% of the "people" walking around actually had more dialogue than just random banter lines. Without an army of level builders and loads of development time, you can have either size or detail, not both.
Well, they had a huge, empty world. I really prefer detailed towns than a detailed world, with a bunch of raiders liberally scattered about in caves. Raiders are OK.. but there's like more raiders and supermutants scattered than actual civilians, and I miss having someone to talk to.
The old Fallouts were fun in that sense, you could break into someone's home, rummage about the place and find easter eggs lying around, laser pistols, etc. Yeah, one thing that disappointed me in FO3 was that finding a laser pistol was not fun. Hell, I started the game having a good gun, and being able to kill trained vault guards, instead of having to survive through the first 2 hours of the game with a sharpened spear. Laser pistols in FO3 were just.. meh.
I know I'm not going anywhere with this post, but the thread is left open for whining anyway and I'd rather whine where nobody is looking
