The game balance of radiation and scarcity in general is pretty whacked.  My main character is level 9, and I've got 40+ stimpacks, 20+ each of RadX and radaway, about a dozen each of jet, psycho, mentats, and buffout, and I've got 100+ or 200+ of every ammo type except .44.  Mainly because I never have to use any of it.  I don't worry radiation anymore because I don't eat.

I guess I could put it on Hard difficulty, but I suspect that'll just make combat more frustrating rather than more involved.  The game should not only try harder to kill you, but give you less stuff to beat it with.  Even .44 ammo doesn't seem scarce when Lincoln's Repeater (woo) can kill just about anything with a couple bullets.

I put it in easy mode in the beginning to get started, but once I get a good character going I put it into hard or very hard. All those stim packs and ammo go by pretty fast.

altough the hints say you can change difficulty while playing i think that doesnt work properly.
at least thats the impression i got.

anyways, you have to play on very hard right from the start, so the game is even remotely frightening, which it should be, at least a wee bit. otherwise, you really dont have to pay attention. to anything.

I'm going to take a stab at making the "perfect character", with 100 points in every skill, and playing in the hardest difficulty... I hope there are enough books in the world, it's going to be a balancing act, hopefully it will be a fun challenge :) (yeah because scavenging every book in the universe is fun)

BTW I modded myself a metal armor with the same stats as the uber ranger armor, just 'cause I got bored of the model and I like to watch some nice female ass in leather pants while I play.

(all my retexturing attempts to make it look like a hardsuit from Bubblegum Crisis have failed tho ;))

But I know theres a bobblehead for each stat and every skill...

There's a more or less long list in the Fallout wikia... probably doesn't list everything tho.

Of course I can always cheat and look up every book location in the GECK. It's easy enough to know how many of each book there is, since the column next to the item shows the item count in the world (including possession, chest, but not random spawns - which I don't think books have. there's a respawning Big Guns book somewhere tho, I think).

On average there's like 22-24 books for each type.

Perhaps Bethesda do deserve a second chance after Oblivion, but (to quote the greatest ever video game reviewer) Bethesda are the patron saints of games that look good in preview sceenshot or trailers (the latter being an exception in this case) but ultimately handle like a sink of second-hand bogwater

Hooray for yahtze!

Also, I, having recently finished the first 2 fallout games, think it was a strange step to take to make it an FPS, but, ultimately, a worthwhile one. Its nice to see a new take on a tried and tested topic and even if people didn't like it, the idea is a good one and hopefully they can improve on that. Hopefully.

Lol, there's more than enough books, I think. Don't worry about it. Just take a INT 10 character, the Educated perk, and Comprehension. Don't add too much to skills you can improve with books, mostly skills like energy weapons and barter. I think most of the perks also add a crazy amount of skills too.

There's also enough drugs and stims to play through the game on the hardest difficulty. I'd do it, but I know there's going to be around 100 other people around the world who'd succeed at it. My bet is on you, Sergius. Do it so I won't feel the urge to :P

My challenge build for this game?  An unarmed combat specialist, obviously including 'unarmed' weapons like the powerfist.  It's not that daunting a prospect in terms of beating up on things, but even on normal difficulty, it's damn hard to get to anyone without getting blown away by gunfire first.

I was inspired to the idea when I generated a random face and got a guy who looked an awful lot like Brad Pitt.  So I named him Tyler, and tagged Unarmed, Explosives, and Speech.  The grenades are necessary concession to difficulty, but I try to punch everything out as much as I can.

Unarmed isn't nearly as difficult as you would imagine. Few of the "dungeon" areas have large areas, meaning getting close to enemies is as easy as leading them around the corner and lying in wait.

On that note, I would love to see someone legitimately beat a behemoth with the unarmed skill.

Nah, unarmed isn't tough. It's a heck lot of fun!

Hehe, I want to make the guy similar to the unarmed superheroic sneaky guy I made in Fallout Tactics. That guy would sneak around guys with huge guns, then beat them to death before they could stand up. Unarmed has been really nerfed in FO3 because of the lack of cool unarmed combat perks.. but that 5 extra damage one is cool.

INT 10 is a waste (get the friggin bobblehead), as is comprehension, in my book (un-tisss, pun combo).

Educated is useful, I guess.

But really, there are a lot of fun perks, so I try to pick very few of those that dont have any special effects. For instance, the only skillboosting perk I take is usually silent running, because it adds, well.... silent running.

What is it? uuuuhhh, intense training? That perk gives you a nice permanent increase to any one stat witch made it probably the only perk I got for the first 5 levels of the game. I really wish perception wasent so useless though, It seems like people of this century seem to think that having good sences are useless. People are too attached to technology... :(

perception is very important for a thief. it lets you see you enemies before they see you, makes you better with traps and lock picking, and if its high enough, will allow you to notice things leading to rare finds when entering certian rooms

wait a sec... if you have perception high enough, you get special messages ? Now that you mention it, I think I remember a single successful perception roll... with per 8 or so.

Anyways, I'm still miffed about how PER doesnt affect weapon range (or rather weapon efficiency at range). Iirc, it always did in the FO series. I mean... the sniper rifle for instance sucks ass (especially in VATS) at distance, no matter what your PER is.

I guess the fact that weapon range is rather limited (and not really increased with skill) is a nice pointer to how crappy the AI range is, and how little they did about that  ;)
